Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Kitab (الكتاب): The Book, meaning the Qur'an.
- Yutla (يُتلى): Recited, read aloud.
- Rahmah (رحمة): Mercy, compassion, a source of blessing.
- Dhikra (ذكرى): A reminder, an admonition, something that stirs the heart to remember.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The verse addresses the disbelievers of Makkah who kept demanding miraculous signs from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as proof of his truthfulness. They asked: "Why doesn't a sign come down to him from his Lord?" In response, Allah poses a profound rhetorical question: "Is it not sufficient for them that We sent down to you the Book which is recited to them?"
This is a powerful challenge that turns their demand upside down. The Qur'an itself is the greatest miracle — far greater than any physical sign they could have imagined. Unlike the miracles of past prophets, which were temporary and witnessed only by those present at the time, the Qur'an is an eternal, living miracle. It has been preserved for over fourteen centuries, recited daily by millions of Muslims around the world, and it continues to challenge humanity to produce anything like it — a challenge that remains unanswered to this day.
The verse emphasizes that this Book is recited to them — it is not hidden or distant; it is within their reach, heard by their ears, and available for their contemplation. This constant recitation is itself a sign of its divine origin, for no human composition can match its eloquence, depth, and transformative power.
Then Allah describes the nature of this Book: "Indeed, in that is a mercy and a reminder for a people who believe." The Qur'an is a double blessing: it is a mercy — a source of divine compassion that guides people to what is good for them in this life and the next, bringing them from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge, from despair to hope. And it is a reminder — it awakens the hearts, stirs the conscience, and calls people to reflect on the signs of Allah in creation and in their own souls.
The verse specifies that this benefit is for "a people who believe" — because the Qur'an is like rain: it falls on all alike, but only fertile soil produces vegetation. Those who approach it with faith and an open heart will find in it endless treasures of guidance and wisdom. As for those who turn away, they deprive themselves of this immense blessing.
Dear reader, reflect on this: Allah has given us a Book that never grows old, never exhausts its meanings, and never fails to guide. Every time you open it, you find something new. Every time you recite it, your heart finds peace. This is the miracle that remains with us today — a mercy and a reminder that calls us to the best of all ways. Let us not be like those who demanded signs while the greatest sign was already before them. Let us open our hearts to this divine gift, for in it lies our success in this world and the Hereafter.
