Key Words and Meanings:

  • Lawla (لَوْلَا): "Why not..." or "If only..." – a phrase of urging or objection, used here by the disbelievers to demand something.
  • Ayāt (آيَاتٌ): Signs, miracles, or divine proofs – here referring to tangible, supernatural miracles they demanded to witness.
  • Nadhīr (نَذِيرٌ): A warner – one who warns people of the consequences of their actions and the coming punishment of Allah.
  • Mubīn (مُبِينٌ): Clear, evident, or manifest – making the warning unmistakably plain and understandable.

Explanation of the Verse:

The disbelievers of Makkah, in their stubbornness and arrogance, said: "Why has no miracle been sent down upon him (Muhammad ﷺ) from his Lord?" They demanded spectacular, physical signs – like the she-camel of Prophet Salih or the staff of Prophet Musa – as if they were testing the truth of his message through their own whims, rather than through sincere reflection.

Allah commanded His Messenger ﷺ to respond to them with a decisive and clarifying answer: "Say: The miracles are only with Allah." This means that the sending of signs and miracles is entirely in Allah's authority and wisdom. He sends them when He wills, to whom He wills, and withholds them as He wills – and it is not for any human being to dictate when or how they should come. The Prophet ﷺ had no control over such matters; his task was not to produce wonders on demand, but to deliver the message.

Then Allah instructed him to say: "And I am only a clear warner." This defines the Prophet's role precisely – he is a warner who clearly and openly calls people to the truth, warning them of Allah's punishment if they persist in disbelief. The greatest miracle he was given was the Qur'an itself – a living, eternal sign that challenges humanity to produce anything like it, and which continues to guide hearts and transform lives to this day.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. The disbelievers' demand for miracles was not born of a sincere search for truth, but of obstinacy and a desire to avoid submission. When people close their hearts, no miracle will convince them – for even the greatest signs, like the splitting of the sea or the resurrection of the dead, were rejected by those who refused to believe.

Yet Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us the most enduring and accessible miracle of all: the Qur'an. It is a book that speaks to every generation, in every language, with its unmatched eloquence, its profound wisdom, and its perfect guidance for every aspect of life. It challenges the intellect, softens the heart, and provides answers to the deepest questions of existence.

So let us not be like those who wait for extraordinary signs before they believe. Instead, let us open our eyes to the countless signs that surround us every day – the miracle of creation, the order of the universe, the breath in our lungs, and above all, the divine words of the Qur'an. And let us embrace the role of the Prophet ﷺ as our guide, who came not to dazzle us with tricks, but to warn us clearly and lead us to the path of eternal success.

The message is simple and clear: belief is not about demanding proofs on our own terms, but about submitting to the truth with an open heart. And when we do, we find that the greatest miracle is the peace and guidance that Allah places in the hearts of those who believe.

📜 Verse 48-52 — Al-'Ankabut

And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Otherwise the falsifiers would have had [cause for] doubt.
Rather, the Qur'an is distinct verses [preserved] within the breasts of those who have been given knowledge. And none reject Our verses except the wrongdoers.
But they say, "Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The signs are only with Allah, and I am only a clear warner."
And is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe.
Say, "Sufficient is Allah between me and you as Witness. He knows what is in the heavens and earth. And they who have believed in falsehood and disbelieved in Allah - it is those who are the losers."
