If you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, "Allah." Then how are they deluded?

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Sakhkhara (سَخَّرَ): Subjugated, subjected to service, and made subservient to humans' benefit.
  • Afaka (يُؤْفَكُونَ): Turned away, diverted from the truth, or deluded into falsehood.

Tafsir (Explanation):

If you, O Messenger, were to ask these polytheists of Makkah a simple, undeniable question: "Who created the heavens and the earth, with all their vastness, order, and perfection? And who subjected the sun and the moon to their precise orbits, bringing light, seasons, and the cycle of day and night?" — they would, without hesitation, answer: "Allah." Their own fitrah (innate nature) and sound reason affirm this, for every mind acknowledges that all contingent beings must trace back to a single, self-existent Creator.

Yet, despite this clear confession, how astonishing is their condition! They turn away from worshipping Him alone and instead devote themselves to idols and false deities that can neither benefit nor harm them. They acknowledge that Allah is the Creator of the heavens, the earth, the sun, and the moon — the greatest signs of His power — and then they worship carved stones and invented gods alongside Him. What greater contradiction and folly could there be?

This verse is a powerful call to reflect on the inconsistency of the human heart. When people admit that Allah alone is the Creator and Sustainer of all things, why do they not also admit that He alone deserves their worship, gratitude, and obedience? The One who created the universe and manages its affairs is surely the only One worthy of devotion. The question "How are they deluded?" is a rhetorical rebuke, meant to expose the irrationality of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and to awaken the conscience.

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. If you already believe in your heart that Allah is the Creator, then let that belief naturally lead you to love Him, obey Him, and turn to Him in every matter. The universe itself is a living testimony to His greatness — the sun rises and sets by His command, the moon waxes and wanes by His will, and the earth brings forth life by His mercy. So why would you turn away from the One who holds all of this in His hands? Embrace the pure worship of Allah alone, and you will find peace, purpose, and true success in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 59-63 — Al-'Ankabut

Who have been patient and upon their Lord rely.
And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allah provides for it and for you. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
If you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, "Allah." Then how are they deluded?
Allah extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him. Indeed Allah is, of all things, Knowing.
And if you asked them, "Who sends down rain from the sky and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness?" they would surely say " Allah." Say, "Praise to Allah "; but most of them do not reason.
