Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yabsutu (يَبْسُطُ): To expand, widen, or increase abundantly.
- Ar-Rizq (الرِّزْق): Provision, sustenance, or livelihood — encompassing all that Allah provides for His creation, whether wealth, health, knowledge, or other blessings.
- Yaqdiru (يَقْدِرُ): To restrict, tighten, or measure out precisely — meaning to make sustenance scarce or limited for someone.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah — the Almighty — alone is the One who expands and increases provision for whomever He wills among His servants, granting them abundance and ease in their livelihood. And He is the One who restricts and tightens provision for whomever He wills, making it scarce and difficult. This is not done arbitrarily or without purpose; rather, it is carried out with perfect wisdom and profound knowledge of what is best for each servant. Allah knows exactly who will benefit from wealth and abundance, and who would be harmed by it — just as He knows who will be purified and strengthened by hardship and scarcity, and who would be ruined by it.
Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of everything — He knows every detail of your circumstances, your hearts, your needs, and your true welfare. Nothing is hidden from Him, whether apparent or concealed, whether in the heavens or on the earth. His distribution of provision is never a mistake, never unjust, and never without purpose. It is a manifestation of His perfect wisdom and His comprehensive knowledge of what truly benefits His servants in this life and the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear believer, when you see that provision is in the Hand of Allah alone — not in the hands of people, not in the strength of your efforts, and not in the schemes of others — your heart finds true peace. The One who expands and restricts is the One who knows you better than you know yourself. So when you are blessed with abundance, let it increase your gratitude and generosity, for it is a trust from the All-Knowing. And when you face restriction, let it increase your patience and reliance upon Allah, for He is testing you with what He knows will ultimately be good for you. Never envy those who have more, and never look down on those who have less — for the distribution is from the Most Wise, and the true measure of success is not in how much you have, but in how you respond to what Allah has given you. Trust in His knowledge, submit to His wisdom, and you will find contentment that no amount of wealth can ever provide.
