Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yaghfiru – He forgives; pardons sins and overlooks shortcomings out of His grace.
- Yu'adhdhibu – He punishes; administers justice and holds to account.
- Ghafoor – The Oft-Forgiving; He who conceals sins and pardons repeatedly.
- Raheem – The Most Merciful; He who showers compassion and kindness upon His creation.
Tafsir (Explanation):
To Allah alone belongs everything that exists in the heavens and everything on the earth—creation, ownership, and full dominion. Nothing escapes His knowledge or His will. He forgives whom He wills out of His boundless mercy, and He punishes whom He wills out of His perfect justice. No one can question His decree, and no one can intercede except by His permission. Yet, the verse closes with a beautiful and comforting truth: Allah is Ghafoor and Raheem—Oft-Forgiving and Most Merciful. His mercy prevails over His wrath, and His forgiveness is vast for those who turn to Him in sincere repentance.
This verse came as a gentle correction and reassurance to the believers. When the Prophet ﷺ supplicated against the disbelievers who had harmed him, Allah reminded him—and the entire ummah—that the final decision rests with Allah alone. Some of those very opponents would later embrace Islam and become beloved believers. Therefore, do not be hasty in calling for destruction upon others, for you do not know what Allah has planned for them. He may guide them, forgive them, and transform them into champions of the faith.
A Da'wah Reflection:
What a profound lesson in mercy this verse carries! Even in the context of conflict and opposition, Allah directs our hearts toward hope rather than despair. He reminds us that no one is beyond His reach—the one who stands against the truth today may be the very one who defends it tomorrow. This is the beauty of Islam: it teaches us to see people through the lens of possibility, not permanence. Allah's forgiveness is so vast that it can embrace the greatest of sinners, and His mercy is so encompassing that it can soften the hardest of hearts. So never lose hope in Allah's mercy for yourself, and never lose hope in His guidance for others. Call to the truth with patience and compassion, for the One who owns the heavens and the earth is fully capable of transforming hearts in the blink of an eye. And know that your own salvation lies in that same mercy—so rush to it, repent sincerely, and live each day as a servant beloved to His Lord.
