Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Mahd (المهد): The cradle; here it refers to the period of infancy when a child is still in the cradle, before the normal age of speech.
- Kahlan (كهلاً): A mature adult, typically past the age of thirty up to fifty; a person of full strength and complete manhood.
- As-Salihin (الصالحين): The righteous ones; those who are upright in faith, speech, and action.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the glad tidings given to Maryam (Mary) about her son 'Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him. It tells us that he will speak to people in two remarkable stages of his life. First, he will speak while still an infant in the cradle—a miraculous event that defies the natural order, as babies do not normally speak. This speech was a sign of Allah's power and a proof of 'Isa's prophethood from his very beginning. Second, he will speak as a mature adult (kahlan), not merely with ordinary words, but with the speech of prophethood and divine revelation—calling people to the worship of Allah alone, guiding them to what benefits their religion and their worldly affairs, and teaching them wisdom and righteousness.
Furthermore, the verse affirms that 'Isa, peace be upon him, is counted among the righteous—those whose words are truthful, whose deeds are pure, and whose hearts are devoted to Allah. His entire life, from the cradle to adulthood, was a living example of obedience, sincerity, and moral excellence. This description serves as a powerful testimony to his noble character and his high station among the prophets.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Beloved reader, ponder over this verse and let it fill your heart with awe and gratitude. Allah, the Almighty, who created the heavens and the earth, is capable of all things. He made a newborn infant speak as a miracle, and He made that same child grow into a man of unparalleled righteousness. This is the same Allah who sent Muhammad, peace be upon him, as the final messenger, and who sent down the Qur'an as a guide for all humanity. If you believe in the miracles of 'Isa, then believe in the greatest miracle of all—the Qur'an—and in the final prophet who brought it. Let this verse inspire you to strive for righteousness in your own life, to speak the truth, to act with integrity, and to dedicate your words and deeds to the pleasure of your Lord. For the path of the righteous is the path of true success, both in this world and in the Hereafter. Embrace Islam with a sincere heart, and you will find peace, purpose, and the eternal mercy of your Creator.
