Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Bisharah" (بُشْرَى) – Glad tidings of something joyful and good.
  • "Kalimah minhu" (كَلِمَةً مِّنْهُ) – A word from Allah, meaning the command "Be" (Kun), by which Allah creates the child without a father.
  • "Wajihan" (وَجِيهًا) – One of high standing, honor, and great respect.
  • "Muqarrabeen" (الْمُقَرَّبِينَ) – Those brought near to Allah, enjoying His special favor and closeness.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Prophet, remember and convey to your nation the remarkable moment when the angels spoke to Maryam (peace be upon her), saying: "O Maryam, indeed Allah gives you glad tidings of a son who will be created by a word from Him—He will merely say to him, 'Be,' and he will come into existence, without a father, as a sign of Allah's absolute power. His name will be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Maryam."

This naming—"son of Maryam"—was itself a declaration that he would be born miraculously without a male parent, so he would be attributed to his mother. His title, "the Messiah," signifies his blessed status and his anointing with divine honors.

Allah then describes this noble servant with three qualities:

  1. He will be "wajihan" (distinguished and honored) in this world – for he will be a Prophet and Messenger, guiding his people with wisdom and performing miracles by Allah's permission, such as healing the blind and the leper and bringing the dead to life.
  2. He will be "wajihan" in the Hereafter – for he will be raised to the highest ranks, granted intercession, and dwell in the loftiest levels of Paradise, honored in the presence of his Lord.
  3. He will be among "al-muqarrabeen" (those brought near to Allah) – for he was raised to the heavens, kept company with the angels, and purified from the flaws of worldly life, enjoying a unique closeness to his Creator.

This verse is a profound reminder of Allah's limitless power: He creates as He wills, without needing any means or causes. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, "Be," and it is. It also honors Maryam (peace be upon her) as a woman of immense purity and faith, chosen for a miracle that would be a sign to all of humanity.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Beloved reader, ponder this: the birth of Jesus (peace be upon him) without a father was not a matter of chance or myth—it was a divine sign of Allah's absolute sovereignty over all things. If Allah can create a human being from a word, then surely He is capable of everything you ask of Him. So turn to Him with a heart full of hope and certainty, for nothing is impossible for Him. And let this story deepen your love for the prophets and your gratitude for the guidance of Islam, which teaches you the truth about Jesus—a noble servant and messenger of Allah, not a god or a son of God. This is the pure monotheism that the Quran calls you to, the path of salvation and peace. Embrace it, and you will find honor in this world and the next, just as Jesus was honored, and you will be among those brought near to your Lord.

She said, "My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?" [The angel] said, "Such is Allah; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is.
