Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Birr (البر): Complete righteousness, piety, and goodness—often interpreted as Paradise and the highest ranks of virtue that draw one closer to Allah.
- Tunfiqoo (تنفقوا): To spend or give in charity, whether obligatory or voluntary, in the way of Allah.
- Mimma Tuhibboon (مما تحبون): From what you love and cherish most—the dearest and most valuable of your possessions.
- Aleem (عليم): All-Knowing; Allah’s perfect and comprehensive knowledge of all things, including intentions and deeds.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse establishes a profound principle for every believer: you will never attain true righteousness—the kind that leads to Paradise and the highest stations with Allah—until you give in charity from the things you hold most dear. It is not enough to give from what is surplus or unwanted; the test of sincere faith lies in parting with what your heart clings to. When you sacrifice your beloved wealth, property, time, or effort for the sake of Allah, you prove that your love for Him surpasses all worldly attachments. This is the essence of al-Birr: a state of the heart that translates into action, purifying your soul and elevating your rank.
The verse then reassures you with a comforting truth: whatever you spend—whether small or great, hidden or public—Allah knows it completely. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will reward you accordingly, multiplying your good deeds and granting you what is far better than what you gave. This knowledge should fill your heart with hope and sincerity, for your Lord is not heedless of even a single grain of charity.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, reflect on your own life: what is the dearest thing you possess—your wealth, your time, your comfort, your skills? Allah is not asking you to give up everything, but He invites you to prove your love for Him by giving from that which you cherish. When you do so, you unlock the door to true righteousness and draw nearer to Paradise. Remember that every act of giving, no matter how small it seems, is witnessed by the All-Knowing, and He will never let it go to waste. So, hasten to spend from what you love, and let your heart find peace in the promise of your Lord—that His reward is greater, His knowledge is perfect, and His mercy encompasses all. This is the path of the righteous, and it is open to you today.
