Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse addresses a false claim made by the Jews of Madinah. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) invited them to Islam and mentioned that he followed the religion of Prophet Ibrāhīm (Abraham), they objected, saying: "You claim to follow the religion of Ibrāhīm, yet you eat camel meat and drink camel milk, which were forbidden in the Torah!" Allah, the Exalted, refutes their claim with decisive evidence.
All pure and good foods were lawful for the Children of Israel — nothing was forbidden to them by divine decree before the Torah was revealed. The only thing that was restricted was what Prophet Yaʿqūb (Isrā'īl), peace be upon him, voluntarily forbade upon himself. When he fell ill, he made a vow that if Allah cured him, he would give up the food and drink he loved most — which were camel meat and camel milk. He kept his vow, and his children followed him in this out of respect, not because Allah had made it obligatory upon them.
When the Torah was later revealed, Allah forbade certain foods to the Children of Israel as a punishment for their transgression and oppression — not because these foods were inherently impure, but as a divine consequence of their wrongdoing. This is confirmed in another verse: "For the wrongdoing of the Jews, We made unlawful for them certain good foods which had been lawful to them" (4:160).
Then Allah challenges them: "Say, O Muhammad: Bring the Torah and recite it, if you are truthful." This was a decisive challenge that exposed their falsehood. If they truly believed that Allah had forbidden these foods in the Torah from the time of Ibrāhīm, they should have brought the Torah and shown the proof. But they were struck with confusion and could not produce it — because they knew very well that the Torah itself testified that this prohibition was only Yaʿqūb's personal vow, not a divine command. Their inability to respond proved their dishonesty and their distortion of the scriptures.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse carries profound lessons for every seeker of truth. It demonstrates the honesty of the Qur'an and the integrity of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who challenged his opponents to bring their own scriptures as evidence — a bold challenge that no liar would ever make. It also reveals how the People of the Book had altered their own texts to serve their desires, while the Qur'an remains preserved and unchangeable.
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of Islam: it is a religion of ease and mercy. Allah did not burden the earlier nations with restrictions except as a consequence of their own actions, and He has lifted those burdens from this Ummah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "I was sent with the easy and tolerant monotheism." Islam does not forbid what is pure and good; rather, it guides humanity to what benefits them in this life and the next.
Let this verse strengthen your trust in the Qur'an as the final, unaltered word of Allah, and let it inspire you to embrace the message of Islam with an open heart — a message that calls you to worship the One True God, to follow His final Messenger, and to enjoy the pure blessings He has made lawful for you.
