Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Mā malakat aymānukum" – those whom your right hands possess, i.e., slaves and servants.
- "Shurakā'a" – partners who share equally in ownership and authority.
- "Kakhīfatikum anfusakum" – the fear you have of free partners who might claim a share in your wealth.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O people, Allah presents to you a parable drawn from your own lives and social realities—one that your minds and hearts can easily grasp. He asks: Would any of you accept that your own servants or slaves—those whom you own and who are entirely under your authority—become equal partners with you in the wealth and provisions Allah has granted you? Would you be comfortable with them having an equal say, to the point that you fear them as you would fear a free, independent partner who could claim a share of your property and challenge your decisions?
The answer is obvious: No, you would never accept such a thing. You would find it utterly demeaning and unacceptable. Yet, you turn around and ascribe to Allah—the Creator and Owner of all that exists—partners from among His own creation, making them equal to Him in worship and devotion. If you cannot accept equality with your own servants, how can you accept that Allah, the Most High, shares His divinity with anyone?
This is why Allah says: "Thus do We detail the signs for a people who reason." He lays out clear proofs and compelling arguments for those who use their intellect, reflect deeply, and allow their sound minds to guide them toward the truth. The parable is not difficult to understand—it is drawn from your own daily experiences, so that no excuse remains for you.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse is a profound invitation to purify your understanding of Allah. Imagine the greatness of Allah: He is the Sovereign, the Owner of all dominion, and nothing in the heavens or the earth escapes His power. Yet, He condescends to speak to you in terms you can relate to, using your own social norms to awaken your conscience. He does not need partners, nor does He benefit from your worship—rather, it is you who benefit when you worship Him alone.
Let this parable soften your heart and open your eyes. If you would never accept a servant as your equal in a small worldly matter, then how can you accept that the Lord of the Worlds shares His glory with idols, stones, or human beings? The very logic that governs your daily affairs should lead you to the purest form of monotheism—the belief in one God, without any partner or associate.
So, O seeker of truth, use your intellect as Allah commands. Reflect on this simple yet profound example, and let it guide you to the straight path—the path of complete submission to Allah alone. For He is the One who created you, sustains you, and deserves all your love, fear, and devotion.
