Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Min da'f (مِن ضَعْفٍ): From weakness — referring to the humble origin of the human being, the feeble drop of fluid (nutfah) from which every person is created.
- Quwwah (قُوَّةً): Strength — the vigor, vitality, and full physical and mental capability of youth and adulthood.
- Shaybah (شَيْبَةً): Gray hair — the visible sign of old age and the passage of time, marking the stage of decline and frailty.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O humanity, reflect upon your own existence and the stages of your life, for in them lies a profound sign of your Creator's wisdom and power. It is Allah alone who brought you into being from a state of utter weakness — from a humble, insignificant drop of fluid that holds no power or strength of its own. Then, by His mercy and will, He transformed that weakness into the strength of youth and adulthood, granting you energy, capability, and the means to live, work, and thrive. But this strength is not permanent; He then causes you to return to weakness once more, accompanied by the gray hair of old age, as your body gradually loses its vigor and returns to a state of dependence.
This cycle of life — from weakness to strength and back to weakness — is not random or purposeless. It is a deliberate act of creation by Allah, who does exactly as He wills. He creates weakness in some and strength in others, and He transitions each soul through these stages at His appointed times. And He is Al-'Aleem (the All-Knowing), who perfectly understands the needs and conditions of every creature at every moment, and Al-Qadeer (the All-Powerful), who is capable of doing all of this and more without any difficulty or obstacle.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and contemplate this verse deeply. The very body you inhabit — with its stages of growth, maturity, and decline — is a living testimony to the existence and majesty of Allah. Who but the All-Powerful Creator could take a weak drop of fluid and fashion from it a complete human being with strength, intelligence, and life? And who but the All-Wise could then gracefully return that person to weakness in old age?
This natural progression is not a cause for despair; rather, it is an invitation to recognize your dependence on Allah at every moment of your existence. Just as He created you and guided you through these stages, He is fully capable of bringing you through death to a new life — a life that is eternal and far greater than this temporary one. The same Power that turns weakness into strength and strength into weakness can surely resurrect you after death and hold you accountable for your deeds.
So let this verse awaken gratitude in your heart for the strength you have been given, humility in your moments of weakness, and hope in the mercy and power of your Lord. Embrace Islam, submit to the One who created you and knows you better than you know yourself, and you will find peace in this life and success in the next. For He who perfected your creation in this world will not abandon you in the Hereafter — He is the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful, and His promise is true.
