Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Most Merciful, has placed a profound and sacred command upon every human being: to be dutiful and kind to their parents. This divine injunction is not merely a suggestion but a binding covenant from the Creator, emphasizing the immense status of parents in Islam. Allah reminds us of the extraordinary sacrifice of the mother, who carries her child in her womb through stages of increasing weakness and fatigue—each day adding to her burden, from the early months of pregnancy to the pains of labor and delivery. Then, after this arduous journey, she nurses her child, and the complete period of pregnancy and weaning spans two full years—a time filled with sleepless nights, endless care, and unwavering devotion.
In this verse, Allah pairs gratitude to Him with gratitude to parents: "Be grateful to Me and to your parents." This beautiful connection teaches us that true thankfulness to Allah is incomplete without honoring those through whom He brought us into this world. The mother's toil is a living sign of Allah's mercy, and the father's provision and protection are equally part of this divine blessing.
The verse concludes with a powerful reminder: "To Me is the final return." This means that every act of kindness or neglect towards parents will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment. Allah, the All-Just, will reward those who showed patience, love, and respect to their parents, and He will hold to account those who failed in this duty.
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Your parents are a trust from Allah in your hands. Their prayers for you are a treasure, and their pleasure is a key to Allah's pleasure. Even if they are elderly, weak, or demanding, remember that their care for you was once unceasing and selfless. Seize the opportunity now—while they are alive—to serve them, speak to them gently, and seek their forgiveness. For the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Paradise lies beneath the feet of mothers," and pleasing one's parents is among the most beloved deeds to Allah. Do not wait until it is too late, for the door of kindness to parents is open only in this life. Let your gratitude to Allah be shown through your love and service to those who raised you, and you will find success in this world and the next.
