Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • يُصَلِّي عَلَيْكُمْ (Yusalli 'Alaykum): He bestows His mercy upon you and praises you in the highest assembly.
  • الظُّلُمَاتِ (Az-Zulumat): The darknesses — referring to the darkness of disbelief, ignorance, and misguidance.
  • النُّورِ (An-Nur): The light — referring to the light of faith, knowledge, and guidance.
  • رَحِيمًا (Raheema): Merciful, compassionate, and kind.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Imagine the Most Merciful Lord turning His divine attention toward you, showering you with His mercy and praise, while His angels — the pure and noble beings who never disobey Him — join in supplication for you, seeking your forgiveness and well-being. This is the profound honor Allah bestows upon the believers. He says: "He is the One Who sends His blessings upon you, and His angels [ask Him to bless and forgive you]."

What is the purpose of this immense divine favor? It is "to bring you out of the darknesses into the light." The darknesses are many: the darkness of shirk (associating partners with Allah), the darkness of ignorance about one's purpose in life, the darkness of sin and heedlessness, and the darkness of despair. Allah, in His infinite mercy, pulls you out of all of these and places you into the radiant light of Islam — the light of knowing your Lord, worshipping Him with sincerity, and living a life of peace and purpose.

This verse is a beautiful reminder that your salvation and guidance are not merely the result of your own efforts. Rather, it is Allah's mercy that precedes you, surrounds you, and guides you. He did not leave you in the darkness of your own devices; He sent His Messenger with the Qur'an, He opened your heart to faith, and He continues to sustain you in that faith. Even the angels are engaged in supplicating for you — what a tremendous honor for the believer!

Then the verse concludes with a statement that fills the heart with hope and love: "And He is ever Merciful to the believers." His mercy is not temporary or conditional upon perfection — it is constant and encompassing. He does not punish the believers as long as they remain obedient and sincere to Him. When they slip, He welcomes their repentance. When they struggle, He eases their path. When they call upon Him, He answers. His mercy in this world guides them, and His mercy in the Hereafter will admit them into His eternal Paradise.

Dear believer, let this verse fill you with gratitude and confidence. You are not alone in your journey — the Lord of the worlds and His angels are with you, supporting you, praying for you, and guiding you from darkness to light. So hold fast to your faith, strive in obedience, and rejoice in the mercy of the Most Merciful. Indeed, He is the One Who turns your darkness into light, and His mercy knows no bounds.
