Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Sabbihū (سَبِّحُوهُ): Glorify Him, declare His perfection and transcendence above any flaw or deficiency. It includes prayer, praise, and remembrance of Allah.
- Bukrah (بُكْرَةً): Early morning, the beginning of the day — specifically referring to the time of the Fajr (dawn) prayer.
- Aṣīlā (أَصِيلًا): Late afternoon or evening — specifically referring to the time of the ʿAṣr (afternoon) prayer.
The Interpretation:
In this noble verse, Allah commands the believers to glorify and exalt Him in the early morning and in the late afternoon. This is a call to fill the beginning and the end of the day with the remembrance of Allah — through the obligatory prayers (Fajr and ʿAṣr), through verbal glorification (saying "SubḥānAllāh"), and through heartfelt devotion.
The early morning and the late afternoon are blessed times when the soul is fresh and receptive. By starting the day with the glorification of Allah, the believer sets a spiritual tone for the rest of the day, protecting himself from sin and distraction. By ending the active part of the day with His remembrance, the believer seals his efforts with purity and gratitude.
This command is not limited to the two prayers alone; it encompasses all forms of dhikr (remembrance) — praising Allah, thanking Him, and reflecting on His greatness — at these two precious moments of the day. The verse gently reminds us that our Lord, who created us and sustains us, deserves to be at the forefront of our thoughts from dawn to dusk.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear believer, imagine beginning each morning with the sweetness of Allah’s name on your tongue — what peace would fill your heart! And imagine ending your afternoon with His praise — what protection would surround you! This verse is an open invitation to a life of constant connection with your Creator. It is not a burden; it is a mercy. The One who asks you to remember Him is the same One who promises to remember you. So seize these blessed moments, and let your day be a living prayer — from the first light of dawn to the golden glow of the evening. This is the path of the righteous, and it leads to the ultimate success: the pleasure of Allah and the eternal bliss of Paradise.
