Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, draws our attention to a magnificent sign of His power and creativity: the two great bodies of water that are not equal. One is fresh, sweet, and delightful—so pure that it quenches thirst and flows smoothly down the throat, a source of life and comfort. The other is salty and bitter, undrinkable due to its intense salinity, yet it too teems with blessings.
From both of these seas—despite their differences—you extract fresh, tender meat (fish) that is delicious and nourishing, and from them you bring forth ornaments such as pearls and coral to adorn yourselves. Reflect on this: the same ocean that gives you sustenance also gives you beauty, and the Creator has placed these treasures within reach for your benefit.
Moreover, you see ships sailing through these waters, cleaving the waves as they journey forth and return, carrying goods and people. This is all made possible by Allah’s grace, so that you may seek His bounty through trade and travel, and so that you may be grateful. Gratitude is the key that unlocks more blessings, and recognizing Allah’s hand in every provision draws the heart closer to Him.
This verse also carries a profound spiritual lesson: just as the fresh and salty seas are not equal, so too are the believer and the disbeliever not equal in the sight of Allah. Though they may share some outward traits, their inner realities differ vastly—one is pure and beneficial, the other bitter and harmful. Let this inspire you to strive for the sweetness of faith, which is the true refreshment for the soul, and to thank Allah for the countless favors He has bestowed upon you, for He is the Most Generous, the Most Merciful.
