Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Manāzil (مَنَازِل): Fixed stations or phases, i.e., specific positions in the sky that the moon passes through each night.
  • ‘Urjūn (عُرْجُون): The curved, dried stalk of a date palm cluster (the branch from which dates hang). When it ages, it becomes thin, bent, and yellowed.
  • Qadīm (قَدِيم): Old, ancient — referring to the dried, withered state of the stalk after a long time.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Exalted, presents another magnificent sign of His power and perfect wisdom: the moon. He has precisely determined for it distinct phases and stations, night after night, in an unerring system. The moon begins as a thin crescent, then gradually increases in light and fullness until it becomes a complete, radiant disc. Then, it begins to diminish once more, shrinking and waning until it returns to its initial state — thin, curved, and pale, resembling the old, dried stalk of a date cluster that has become bent, slender, and yellowed with age. This precise cycle is not random; it is a measured, orderly progression that repeats with absolute accuracy, demonstrating that the One who orchestrates such celestial movements is none other than Allah, the All-Wise, the All-Powerful.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this celestial wonder! The moon, which you see almost every night, is not a mere decoration in the sky — it is a living lesson in submission to Allah’s command. It never deviates from its path, never delays or advances, and never fails to follow the exact course set for it. This is the same Allah who created you and placed you on this earth. If the moon, with all its beauty and grandeur, humbly obeys its Creator, should you not also submit to Him who has given you intellect, choice, and countless blessings? The changing phases of the moon also remind you of the fleeting nature of this world — just as the moon grows and then fades, so too does life rise and decline. Let this sign draw you closer to your Lord, increase your gratitude for His blessings, and inspire you to live a life of obedience and purpose. Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and day are signs for those of understanding — so be among those who truly see and believe.

📜 Verse 37-41 — Yasin

And a sign for them is the night. We remove from it [the light of] day, so they are [left] in darkness.
And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
And the moon - We have determined for it phases, until it returns [appearing] like the old date stalk.
It is not allowable for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each, in an orbit, is swimming.
And a sign for them is that We carried their forefathers in a laden ship.
