Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • السَّعْيَ (al-sa'y): Reaching the age of striving and working alongside his father; i.e., when Ishmael grew old enough to walk, work, and assist his father in his efforts.
  • أَذْبَحُكَ (adhbahuka): I slaughter you (by cutting your throat) as a sacrifice.
  • مَا تُؤْمَرُ (ma tu'mar): What you are commanded (by Allah) — referring to the divine command conveyed through the prophetic dream.
  • الصَّابِرِينَ (al-sabirin): The patient ones — those who endure hardship with steadfastness, submission, and trust in Allah.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

When Ishmael grew up and reached the age where he could walk and work alongside his father, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was tested with a profound vision. In a dream, he saw himself sacrificing his beloved son. The dreams of prophets are true revelations from Allah, not mere fantasies or whispers of the soul. So Ibrahim, with a heart full of love yet firm in obedience, went to his son and said: "O my dear son, I have seen in my dream that I slaughter you. So consider — what do you see?" This was not a command, but a consultation, for Ibrahim wanted to see his son's patience and submission, and to prepare his heart for the trial.

Ishmael, the righteous and obedient son, did not hesitate. He did not run away, nor did he argue. Instead, he replied with words that echo through eternity: "O my father, do what you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient ones." He submitted completely to the will of Allah, showing that he was not only patient but also content with Allah's decree. He attached his patience to the will of Allah, knowing that true patience comes only with His help and grace.

This verse teaches us the ultimate lesson of submission to Allah's command, even when it contradicts our deepest desires. It shows the beautiful relationship between a father and son who both prioritise Allah's pleasure above all else. Ibrahim's gentle approach in consulting his son, and Ishmael's noble response, demonstrate the highest level of faith, love, and mutual respect. They remind us that when we surrender to Allah with sincerity, He never lets us down — for He replaced Ishmael with a great sacrifice, and made this story a lasting example of devotion for all generations. Let us learn from this: true peace lies in submitting to Allah's will, and true patience is rewarded with His mercy and honour.
