Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Aslamā" (أَسْلَمَا): Both submitted and surrendered themselves wholly to the command of Allah, accepting His decree with complete obedience and trust.
  • "Tallahū" (تَلَّهُ): He laid him down, casting him gently upon the ground.
  • "Lil-jabīn" (لِلْجَبِينِ): Upon the side of his forehead — the area of the face between the temple and the eyebrow.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the vision was made clear to Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) that it was indeed a divine command to sacrifice his beloved son, both father and son demonstrated an unparalleled level of submission to Allah. The phrase "when they both submitted" captures the beautiful reality that this was not merely the obedience of a father forcing his child, but a mutual, willing surrender — the son, Ismail (peace be upon him), had already said to his father: "Do as you are commanded; you will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient." And so, with hearts filled with faith and eyes streaming with tears of love for Allah, Ibrahim laid his son down upon the ground, turning his face to the side, placing his forehead upon the earth — the very position of prostration — so that he might carry out the command without having to look upon his son's face, a mercy from Allah to ease the trial.

This moment stands as one of the greatest demonstrations of faith in human history. Imagine the depth of love between a father and his long-awaited son — a son granted after years of supplication in his old age. Yet when the command of Allah came, that love was not a barrier to obedience; rather, it was purified and elevated. Both father and son understood that true love for the Creator supersedes all else, and that whatever Allah commands is ultimately for the good of His servants, even when the wisdom is hidden from their eyes.

This verse teaches us that Islam is not a religion of mere ritual or lip-service; it is a religion of total surrender — *islam* literally means "submission." The beauty of this scene is that it was not a submission born of compulsion, but of conviction. The son did not run away; he did not resist. He submitted because he knew his father was a prophet of Allah, and he trusted in the wisdom of His Lord. The father did not hesitate, for he knew that Allah does not command except that which is just and wise.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, contemplate this scene and ask yourself: What is it that stands between you and complete submission to Allah? Is it your wealth, your status, your desires, or perhaps even your loved ones? The test of Ibrahim and Ismail reminds us that nothing — no matter how precious — should ever take precedence over the command of Allah. When you submit to Allah with a sincere heart, He does not abandon you. As we know, Allah ransomed Ismail with a great sacrifice, and He will never leave you without a way out when you obey Him sincerely. This is the essence of faith: to trust that whatever Allah commands, even when it appears difficult, carries within it immense mercy and blessing. May Allah grant us the strength to submit to Him in all aspects of our lives, just as these two noble prophets submitted, and may He reward our patience and obedience with His infinite grace.

📜 Verse 101-105 — As-Saffat

So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.
And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast."
And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead,
We called to him, "O Abraham,
You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
