Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿibād Allāh (عباد الله): The servants of Allah, those who worship Him alone.
  • al-mukhlaṣīn (المخلصين): Those who have been purified and chosen by Allah, sincere in their faith and devotion to Him alone, free from any form of shirk (polytheism) or hypocrisy.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse comes as a divine exception to the fate that befell the people of Prophet Elijah (Ilyās, peace be upon him). When his people rejected his message and persisted in their disbelief, Allah’s decree of punishment was sealed against them—they would be gathered for reckoning and severe chastisement. However, this verse declares a profound exception: "Except the sincere servants of Allah." These are the believers among his people who purified their worship, dedicating it entirely to Allah, and who followed the prophet with unwavering faith. For them, the threat of punishment is lifted; they are saved from the torment and are granted safety on the Day of Judgment.

This exception is not a mere loophole but a reflection of Allah’s boundless mercy and justice. It teaches us that no matter how widespread corruption becomes, sincere faith always finds a path to salvation. The word *mukhlaṣīn* (rather than *mukhlisīn*) emphasizes that their sincerity was not merely their own effort—it was a divine gift, as Allah Himself purified and preserved them from the filth of sin and deviation. Their hearts were sealed with love for truth, and their deeds were aligned with divine pleasure.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder the beauty of this verse: even in the midst of a doomed nation, there were hearts that Allah protected. This is a beacon of hope for every believer living amidst corruption and trials. It reminds us that salvation is not determined by the majority’s choices, but by our personal connection with Allah. The door of sincerity is open to you—right now, in this very moment. Purify your intention, turn to Allah with a humble heart, and seek to be among His *mukhlaṣīn*. For when Allah chooses you as His sincere servant, no force on earth or in the heavens can harm you. The same mercy that saved the believers of Ilyās’s people is extended to you, if you truly seek it. Let this verse ignite in you a burning desire to be among those whom Allah singles out for His protection, both in this life and the Hereafter.
