Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • لَذَائِقُو (ladhā'iqū): Those who will taste or experience something directly.
  • الْعَذَابِ (al-ʿadhāb): The punishment or torment.
  • الْأَلِيمِ (al-alīm): The painful, agonizing, or excruciating.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a direct and unequivocal address to the polytheists and disbelievers who rejected the messengers of Allah and persisted in their denial of the truth. Allah declares with absolute certainty — using the emphatic particle "إِنَّ" and the emphatic "لَ" — that they will most surely taste the painful punishment. This is not a mere threat or possibility; it is an established decree that will inevitably come to pass on the Day of Resurrection.

The punishment described here is not just any punishment, but one that is "alīm" — intensely painful and agonizing, penetrating deeply into the soul and body. This torment is the direct consequence of their own choices: their shirk (associating partners with Allah), their stubborn rejection of the messengers, and their mockery of the divine message. Every word of denial they uttered, every act of worship directed to false deities, and every rejection of guidance has been recorded and will be recompensed with a punishment that matches the gravity of their crimes.

This verse serves as a profound reminder that Allah's justice is perfect and absolute. No one escapes the consequences of their deeds. The pleasure of this worldly life, which the disbelievers clung to and preferred over the truth, will vanish, and what awaits them is a reality far more severe than anything they could imagine.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a wake-up call wrapped in divine mercy. Allah did not leave humanity in ignorance — He sent messengers, revealed scriptures, and clarified the path of guidance. The fact that He warns us so clearly of the consequences of disbelief is itself a sign of His compassion. He wants us to know, before it is too late, that the road of denial leads only to ruin.

But the door of repentance remains wide open. No matter how far one has strayed, Allah's mercy is greater. The very same verse that warns of punishment for the disbelievers is an invitation to turn back, to embrace the truth, and to replace the taste of torment with the sweetness of faith. Islam calls you to a life of purpose, peace, and eternal success. Do not let pride or stubbornness deprive you of the greatest treasure — the pleasure of Allah and the everlasting bliss of Paradise.

Choose today, before the Day when no choice remains. The punishment is real, but so is the mercy. And Allah's mercy is far greater than His wrath for those who sincerely repent and believe.

📜 Verse 36-40 — As-Saffat

And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"
Rather, the Prophet has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.
Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment,
And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do -
But not the chosen servants of Allah.
