Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Tujzawna — You are recompensed or rewarded (or punished) in return for deeds.
- Illā mā kuntum taʿmalūn — Except for what you used to do; i.e., your recompense is solely based on your own actions.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who disbelieve and persist in your rejection of the truth, know that on the Day of Judgment you will not receive anything other than the exact consequence of what you yourselves earned in this worldly life. You will not be wronged, nor will any punishment befall you without cause. Rather, every evil deed you committed — your disbelief in Allah, your association of partners with Him, your disobedience to His commands, and your pursuit of sin — will be met with its just recompense. This is the perfect justice of Allah, the All-Wise, Who does not punish anyone except for what their own hands have sent forth.
This verse carries a profound and universal truth: the principle of personal accountability. No one bears the burden of another, and no one escapes the consequences of their own choices. The punishment you face is not arbitrary or unjust; it is the natural and inevitable fruit of the seeds you planted in your worldly life. If you sowed disbelief and transgression, you will reap the harvest of regret and torment. But if you had sowed faith and righteousness, you would have reaped eternal bliss.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
How beautiful and reassuring is this divine justice! It tells every soul that its destiny lies in its own hands. Allah does not oppress anyone, and He does not punish without cause. This is an invitation to self-reflection: what are we planting today? Are we building a future of light or a future of fire? The verse is a call to turn back to Allah before the day comes when deeds are weighed and nothing can be changed. It is a reminder that mercy is available now, in this life, through repentance and good works — so that when we stand before our Lord, we may find nothing but what pleases us, and receive nothing but what we have earned of goodness. Let this be a motivation to race toward obedience, for the One who is just in punishment is also the Most Generous in reward.
