Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fawj (فَوْجٌ): A group, company, or multitude of people.
  • Muqtahim (مُقْتَحِمٌ): One who enters forcefully and abruptly, plunging into something with intensity.
  • La marhaban (لَا مَرْحَبًا): An expression of rejection and disdain, meaning "no welcome" or "no ease for them."
  • Salū al-Nār (صَالُو النَّارِ): Those who will enter and endure the Fire, experiencing its scorching heat.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the tyrants and wrongdoers are gathered in Hell, they will turn on one another in blame and mutual reproach. As new groups of sinners are driven into the Fire, the earlier inhabitants will say, pointing at them: "This is a crowd rushing in with you!" — meaning, these are more of your kind, entering the same punishment alongside you. But then they add, with bitter contempt: "No welcome to them!" — that is, may they find no comfort, no relief, and no spaciousness in their dwelling. They continue: "Indeed, they are burners in the Fire" — just as we are burning, they too will taste the same torment and share in the same agony.

This scene reveals the utter breakdown of every bond among the damned. Even those who once supported each other in wrongdoing now curse one another. Their words are not of mercy but of spite, and their greeting is not of peace but of rejection. The severity of the Fire is such that it strips away all pretense of friendship, leaving only regret and hatred.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and ponder this vivid scene. The people of Hell — despite sharing a fate — find no solace in one another's company. Their unity in sin does not translate into unity in comfort; rather, it multiplies their misery. How different is the state of the believers! In Paradise, the righteous greet one another with "Peace be upon you" and are surrounded by mercy and love. This contrast invites you to choose your companions wisely in this life, for your company here may well be your company in the Hereafter. Let this verse be a reminder that every step toward righteousness is a step away from such regret, and every sincere repentance opens a door to a welcome that never ends — the welcome of Allah’s eternal mercy. Turn to Him now, before the day when no welcome is given and no escape remains.
