Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Afaghayr Allah (أَفَغَيْرَ اللَّهِ): "Is it other than Allah?" – a rhetorical question expressing astonishment and rejection.
  • Ta'murūnni (تَأْمُرُونِّي): "You command me" – addressing those who were trying to persuade the Prophet to compromise.
  • A'bud (أَعْبُدُ): "I should worship" – the act of devotion and servitude.
  • Al-Jāhilūn (الْجَاهِلُونَ): "The ignorant ones" – those lacking true knowledge of Allah's oneness and His exclusive right to worship.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah commands His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) to address the polytheists of Quraysh who were persistently trying to lure him away from the pure worship of Allah alone, calling him to follow the ways of his forefathers and their idols. The Prophet is told to respond with a tone of profound astonishment and rebuke: "Do you really command me to worship anything other than Allah, O you who are ignorant of His greatness and His exclusive right to worship?"

The question is rhetorical, meaning it carries a decisive negation. It is as if the Prophet is saying: "This is an impossibility! How could I, who knows the reality of Allah's oneness and His absolute perfection, ever turn to false deities that are mere creations – powerless, deaf, and blind?" The address "O you ignorant ones" is a direct censure, highlighting that their invitation stems from ignorance, not from knowledge or insight. They are ignorant of the fact that worship is due solely to Allah – the Creator, the Sustainer, the One who has no partner, no equal, and no rival. No act of devotion, whether prayer, sacrifice, supplication, or reliance, is valid or acceptable except when directed to Him alone.

The verse also carries a timeless lesson for every believer: the call to compromise in matters of faith is a call rooted in ignorance, and the believer must meet it with firmness, clarity, and unwavering conviction. The Prophet's stance here is a model of steadfastness – he does not waver, he does not entertain the suggestion, and he does not soften his response when it comes to the fundamentals of tawhid (monotheism). This is the essence of true devotion: to know that Allah alone deserves our worship, and to declare that truth boldly, regardless of who opposes it.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a beacon of light for every Muslim who faces pressure – whether from society, family, or peers – to dilute their faith or compromise their principles. It teaches us that true honor lies in standing firm for the truth, even when the whole world seems to be against us. The Prophet's response was not harsh out of arrogance, but out of love for the truth and compassion for those who were lost in ignorance. As believers, we are called to embody the same spirit: to invite others to the worship of Allah alone with wisdom and beautiful preaching, but never to surrender our core beliefs for the sake of acceptance. When you know your Lord, you will never trade His pleasure for the approval of His creation. Let this verse strengthen your heart, purify your intention, and remind you that the most beautiful words a believer can utter are: "My Lord is Allah alone, and I worship none but Him."

📜 Verse 62-66 — Az-Zumar

Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is, over all things, Disposer of affairs.
To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. And they who disbelieve in the verses of Allah - it is those who are the losers.
Say, [O Muhammad], "Is it other than Allah that you order me to worship, O ignorant ones?"
And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers."
Rather, worship [only] Allah and be among the grateful.
