Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Maqālīd (مَقَالِيدُ): The keys or controls of the treasuries; the singular is *miqlād* (مِقْلاد). It signifies the means by which all treasures and provisions are unlocked and distributed.
- Kafarū (كَفَرُوا): Those who disbelieved, denied, or rejected with ingratitude.
- Āyāt (آيَاتِ): The signs, proofs, and revelations of Allah—including the Qur’an and the clear evidences within it.
- Al-Khāsirūn (الْخَاسِرُونَ): The utterly lost ones—those who have incurred the greatest loss in both this world and the Hereafter.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse establishes a profound and absolute truth: to Allah alone belong the keys of the treasuries of the heavens and the earth. He is the Sole Disposer of all affairs, the One Who opens the gates of provision, mercy, rain, vegetation, and every form of goodness to whomever He wills, and withholds them from whomever He wills. Nothing moves in the universe—from the falling of rain from the sky to the sprouting of seeds from the earth—except by His command and His will. The keys to all treasures, whether visible or hidden, are in His Hand alone, and no one can grant or prevent anything except by His permission.
Then the verse turns to a sobering reality: those who disbelieve in the signs of Allah—the clear proofs, the miraculous revelations, and the unmistakable evidences of His power and oneness—are the true losers. Their loss is twofold: in this world, they are deprived of the greatest treasure of all, which is faith (īmān) and guidance, and their hearts remain sealed from the light of truth. And in the Hereafter, their loss is eternal, for they will abide forever in the Fire, having traded the everlasting bliss of Paradise for temporary delusions and falsehood.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and ponder: if all the keys of the heavens and the earth are in Allah’s Hand, then why would you turn away from Him? Every breath you take, every provision you eat, every drop of rain that falls—all are from His treasuries. He is the One Who opens doors of mercy and closes doors of hardship. The one who holds onto Allah is never truly poor, and the one who turns away from Him is never truly rich, even if he owns the entire world.
This verse invites you to a life of trust and reliance upon Allah. When you recognize that all affairs are in His Hand, your heart finds peace, your worries diminish, and your hope is renewed. Do not be among those who see the signs of Allah—the majestic skies, the vast earth, the intricate design of your own being—and yet turn away in arrogance or heedlessness. For the loss of faith is the greatest loss of all, and nothing can compensate for it.
Open your heart to the truth today. Let the keys of the heavens and the earth remind you of the Key-Master Himself. Submit to Him, love Him, and worship Him alone, and you will find that He opens for you the doors of success, contentment, and eternal happiness in this life and the next. Do not let yourself be counted among the losers—for the door of repentance is always open, and Allah’s mercy embraces all who turn to Him sincerely.
