📖 English Meaning
And they request from you, [O Muhammad], a [legal] ruling concerning women. Say, "Allah gives you a ruling about them and [about] what has been recited to you in the Book concerning the orphan girls to whom you do not give what is decreed for them - and [yet] you desire to marry them - and concerning the oppressed among children and that you maintain for orphans [their rights] in justice." And whatever you do of good - indeed, Allah is ever Knowing of it.

  • Yatāmā an-Nisā’ – Orphaned women (those who have lost their fathers and are under guardianship).
  • Mā kutiba lahunna – What has been prescribed for them (i.e., the dowry, inheritance, and other rights).

  • Bil-Qisṭ – With justice and fairness.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regarding a matter that weighed heavily on the hearts of the believers: the rights of women, especially orphans. The people had been asking the Prophet about how to deal with the affairs of women—what is due to them, and what restrictions apply. So Allah commands him to reply: “Allah Himself gives you the ruling concerning them,” and then He adds that what is recited to them in the Book (the Qur’an) also contains clear guidance on this matter.

The verse then highlights a specific injustice that was prevalent in pre-Islamic society: there were orphaned girls under the guardianship of men who would not give them the dowry, inheritance, or other rights that Allah had ordained for them. Some guardians would even prevent these orphans from marrying, either out of greed for their wealth or because they found them unattractive, while at the same time they would eagerly seek to marry the beautiful ones among them while still withholding their rights. Allah exposes this hypocrisy and commands that these women be given their full due.

The verse also extends the ruling to all vulnerable people, particularly young children who were historically denied their inheritance simply because they were too young or female. Allah commands that they too must receive their rights, and that guardians must deal with orphans with absolute justice—not taking advantage of their weakness, not consuming their wealth, and not obstructing their welfare in this life or the Hereafter.

Finally, the verse closes with a profound reassurance: “Whatever good you do, Allah is fully aware of it.” This is both a promise and a warning. It is a promise that no act of kindness, no matter how small, will be lost—Allah sees it and will reward it abundantly. And it is a warning that no injustice, no matter how hidden, escapes His knowledge.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse is a timeless reminder of Islam’s profound concern for the vulnerable. Imagine the mercy of a religion that, fourteen centuries ago, commanded the protection of orphaned girls, the fair treatment of children, and the just handling of the weak—long before modern human rights declarations ever existed. Islam did not merely advise kindness; it made it a binding obligation, and it tied the conscience of the believer to the all-seeing eye of Allah.

Dear reader, let this verse inspire you to examine your own dealings. Are there orphans, widows, or vulnerable people in your community whose rights you might be overlooking? Is there a relative or a neighbor whose due you have neglected? Allah is watching, and He has promised to reward every good deed—no matter how small—with His boundless generosity.

Let us be among those who stand up for justice, who protect the weak, and who give others their full rights, for indeed, Allah is with those who do good. And what a beautiful promise that is!

📜 Verse 125-129 — An-Nisa

And who is better in religion than one who submits himself to Allah while being a doer of good and follows the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth? And Allah took Abraham as an intimate friend.
And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allah, of all things, encompassing.
And if a woman fears from her husband contempt or evasion, there is no sin upon them if they make terms of settlement between them - and settlement is best. And present in [human] souls is stinginess. But if you do good and fear Allah - then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
And you will never be able to be equal [in feeling] between wives, even if you should strive [to do so]. So do not incline completely [toward one] and leave another hanging. And if you amend [your affairs] and fear Allah - then indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
