- Taqtulu anfusakum (تَقْتُلُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ): Literally "do not kill yourselves," which includes not killing one another and not causing self-destruction.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger! Allah, in His infinite mercy, addresses you with a command that protects your lives, your wealth, and your society. He forbids you from consuming one another's wealth unjustly — whether through theft, deception, bribery, gambling, usury, or any other means that violates the rights of others. Such practices corrupt the heart, breed enmity, and destroy the bonds of brotherhood within the community.
However, Allah makes a clear exception: trade and commerce conducted with mutual consent and free will is lawful and blessed. When both parties willingly agree to a transaction — honest, transparent, and free from coercion or deceit — then the wealth earned through it becomes pure and permissible. This teaches us that Islam does not forbid earning wealth; rather, it elevates the pursuit of provision into an act of worship when done with integrity and fairness.
Then Allah adds a profound warning: "And do not kill yourselves." This encompasses not only murder and suicide but also any action that leads to self-destruction — whether through engaging in forbidden wealth that ruins one's spiritual life, or through reckless behavior that endangers one's physical well-being. By consuming wealth unjustly, a person harms their own soul, their society, and their standing before Allah.
Allah concludes with a beautiful reminder: "Indeed, Allah is ever Merciful to you." His mercy is the reason He sets these boundaries — not to restrict you, but to protect you. He prohibited the Children of Israel from certain severe measures, but for this Ummah, He opened the doors of lawful provision and mutual respect. He knows that when wealth is earned purely and hearts are at peace, society flourishes, and the worship of Allah becomes easier and sweeter.
So, dear believer, let this verse be a guiding light in your daily dealings. Let your earnings be pure, your transactions be honest, and your treatment of others be just. In doing so, you honor the mercy of Allah upon you, and you build a life that is pleasing to Him and beneficial to all. This is the path of true success — in this world and the Hereafter.
