Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • أَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ (a'rid 'anhum): Turn away from them, do not punish them or confront them harshly.
  • عِظْهُمْ (‘izhum): Admonish them, advise them sincerely.
  • قَوْلًا بَلِيغًا (qawlan balighan): A profound, eloquent, and penetrating speech that reaches deep into the heart and leaves a lasting impact.

Tafsir (Explanation):

These are the ones whose hearts Allah knows completely—every trace of hypocrisy, every hidden intention, and every ill motive they conceal. Nothing is hidden from His knowledge, for He is the All-Knowing of what lies within breasts.

O Prophet, since their true state is known to Allah alone, you are commanded to turn away from them—do not seek to expose them or punish them for what is hidden. Instead, your role is one of mercy and guidance: admonish them openly, reminding them of Allah’s commands and prohibitions, and speak to them privately, in their moments of solitude, with words that are deeply moving and profoundly effective. Let your words be gentle yet firm, reaching the core of their hearts, stirring their conscience, and awakening them to the danger of their ways. Warn them of Allah’s punishment and invite them to sincere repentance, for perhaps such heartfelt counsel will lead them back to the path of truth.

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer: we are not judges of what lies in people’s hearts—that is Allah’s exclusive domain. Our duty is to advise with wisdom, to correct with kindness, and to leave the hidden matters to the One who knows all. How beautiful is this guidance from our Lord! It teaches us to combine justice with compassion, and truth with gentleness. When we encounter those who stray, let us remember this noble approach: turn away from their faults, advise them sincerely, and speak to them in a way that touches their souls—for hearts are softened by words that come from a place of love and concern for their salvation. Indeed, this is the path of the Prophet ﷺ, and it is the path that leads hearts to Allah.

📜 Verse 61-65 — An-Nisa

And when it is said to them, "Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger," you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.
So how [will it be] when disaster strikes them because of what their hands have put forth and then they come to you swearing by Allah, "We intended nothing but good conduct and accommodation."
Those are the ones of whom Allah knows what is in their hearts, so turn away from them but admonish them and speak to them a far-reaching word.
And We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by permission of Allah. And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you, [O Muhammad], and asked forgiveness of Allah and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.
