Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah Almighty takes a solemn oath by His own noble Self, swearing that these people—who claim faith with their tongues but resist the Prophet's judgment—are not true believers. Allah says: "But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you a judge over what has arisen between them." This means that genuine faith is not merely a verbal declaration; it is a reality that manifests in action. True believers must refer their disputes and conflicts to the Prophet ﷺ during his lifetime, and to his Sunnah (his teachings and way) after his passing. This applies to all matters of life—whether personal, familial, social, or political—for the Prophet's judgment is the ultimate reference in every affair.
Then Allah adds a second condition: "Then they will not find within themselves any discomfort from what you have decided." This means that after the Prophet's ruling is given, the believer's heart must be at peace with it—free from any inner resistance, doubt, or unease. The soul must accept the ruling with contentment and certainty, not with grudging compliance.
Finally, Allah states the third condition: "And they will submit completely." This is a total surrender—outwardly and inwardly—with full acceptance and obedience, without hesitation or reservation. The believer's outward actions and inner feelings must both align with the divine judgment.
This verse beautifully illustrates that faith is not complete until the heart finds rest in Allah's and His Messenger's rulings, and until one's entire being—mind, heart, and limbs—surrenders to the divine will. It is a call to purify our hearts from any trace of arrogance or self-opinion that contradicts the guidance of Allah and His Messenger.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a mirror for every soul claiming faith. Ask yourself: When a matter of disagreement arises in your life—whether with family, friends, or in your community—do you sincerely turn to the Quran and the authentic Sunnah as your judge? Do you feel complete peace in your heart with what Allah and His Messenger have decreed, even if it contradicts your personal desires or the opinions of those around you?
This is the essence of true faith: a heart that finds its rest in submission to Allah, and a soul that rejoices in His commands. The Prophet ﷺ said, "None of you truly believes until his desires are in accordance with what I have brought." (Narrated by an-Nawawi in his Forty Hadiths).
Let this verse be a gentle reminder that Islam is not a partial commitment—it is a complete way of life. When we surrender fully to Allah's judgment, we find a peace that surpasses all understanding, and a tranquility that no worldly opinion can provide. May Allah make us among those who submit wholeheartedly and find true contentment in His decree.
