📖 English Meaning
And if We had decreed upon them, "Kill yourselves" or "Leave your homes," they would not have done it, except for a few of them. But if they had done what they were instructed, it would have been better for them and a firmer position [for them in faith].

Word Meanings:

  • "Kutiba" (كَتَبْنَا): We made it obligatory or decreed it as a command.
  • "Iqtulū anfusakum" (اقْتُلُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ): Kill yourselves — meaning, slay one another, as was prescribed for the Children of Israel as a test of obedience.
  • "Aw ikhrujū min diyārikum" (أَوِ اخْرُجُوا مِن دِيَارِكُم): Or leave your homes and homelands — i.e., abandon your dwellings for the sake of Allah.
  • "Yūʿaẓūna bihī" (يُوعَظُونَ بِهِ): What they are admonished with — the commands and guidance they receive through the Prophet (peace be upon him).
  • "Tathbītan" (تَثْبِيتًا): Firmness, steadfastness, and deepening of faith.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most Merciful, reveals here a profound truth about human nature and the wisdom behind His commands. He tells us that had He made it an absolute obligation upon the hypocrites — those who claimed faith but turned to false judges — to kill one another or to abandon their homes entirely, they would not have complied, except for a very few among them. This was not a command given to them, but rather a test of their hearts, and the result showed their weakness and insincerity. Only a small group of sincere believers — among the Companions — declared with certainty that had the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered them, they would have obeyed without hesitation.

Then Allah turns to a beautiful and encouraging truth: had they actually done what they were advised — obeying the Messenger, submitting to Allah’s commands, and avoiding what they were warned against — it would have been far better for them in this life and the next. It would have strengthened their faith, anchored their hearts, and made their belief firm and unshakable. Obedience is never a burden; it is a source of blessing, stability, and divine support.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear, and He knows the weakness of His servants. Yet He also shows us that the path of obedience — even when it seems difficult — is always the path of true success. When we submit to Allah’s guidance, we do not lose; we gain firmness in faith, peace in the heart, and a reward that is immense. Let us not be like those who hesitate when called to truth. Instead, let us be among the few who say with certainty: "We hear and we obey." For indeed, the one who draws near to Allah will find Allah drawing near to him, and the one who follows the straight path will be guided to the best of outcomes — in this world and the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 64-68 — An-Nisa

And We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by permission of Allah. And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you, [O Muhammad], and asked forgiveness of Allah and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.
And if We had decreed upon them, "Kill yourselves" or "Leave your homes," they would not have done it, except for a few of them. But if they had done what they were instructed, it would have been better for them and a firmer position [for them in faith].
And then We would have given them from Us a great reward.
And We would have guided them to a straight path.
