Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Duʿiya Allahu waḥdahu: When Allah alone is called upon — i.e., when pure monotheism (Tawḥīd) is proclaimed and all worship is directed exclusively to Him.
  • Kafartum: You disbelieved — you rejected and refused.
  • Yushrak bihi: A partner is associated with Him — i.e., when polytheism (shirk) is introduced, attributing divinity to others alongside Allah.
  • Tuʾminū: You believe — you accept and affirm.
  • Al-Ḥukm: The judgment, the final decision and decree.
  • Al-ʿAliyy: The Most High — exalted in His essence, His rank, and His overwhelming power.
  • Al-Kabīr: The Supreme, the Greatest — He whose greatness surpasses everything, and before whom all things are small and submissive.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment, when they will be cast into the Fire and will cry out in regret and despair. They will be told: "This punishment you are suffering is the direct consequence of your own conduct in the worldly life."

What was that conduct? When Allah alone was invoked — when they were called to pure monotheism, to worship Allah alone without any partner, to devote their prayers, their sacrifices, their hopes, and their fears solely to Him — they responded with disbelief and arrogance. They turned away in pride and rejected the call of truth.

But when a partner was associated with Allah — when they were invited to worship idols, statues, saints, or any created being alongside the Creator — they readily believed and accepted. They embraced falsehood with open arms while rejecting the truth with closed hearts. This was their tragedy: they preferred the invented lies of men over the clear truth of their Lord.

Then comes the decisive statement: "So the judgment belongs to Allah, the Most High, the Supreme." On that Day, all authority that they once gave to their idols and false deities will be stripped away. The final verdict — whether to punish or to forgive, to admit into Paradise or to cast into Hell — belongs to Allah alone. He is the Most High in His essence, His power, and His supremacy; nothing escapes His knowledge or His will. He is the Supreme, before whose greatness every tyrant will bow, every idol will crumble, and every false god will vanish.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: the choices we make in this life determine our destiny in the next. Those who reject the call to pure worship of Allah and instead embrace falsehood will face the bitter consequences. But those who answer the call of Tawḥīd — who worship Allah alone with sincerity and devotion — will find His mercy, His forgiveness, and His eternal reward.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this verse. The disbelievers were not punished merely for their ignorance — they were punished because they *chose* falsehood over truth, and they *persisted* in that choice until death. The door of repentance remains open in this life. Allah, the Most High and Supreme, is also the Most Merciful and the Most Forgiving. He calls you today, just as He called them: to worship Him alone, to submit your heart to Him, and to follow His guidance. Do not let your end be like theirs. Answer His call now, before the judgment that belongs to Him alone becomes your reality. For He is the One who says, "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful" (Az-Zumar 39:53).

📜 Verse 10-14 — Ghafir

Indeed, those who disbelieve will be addressed, "The hatred of Allah for you was [even] greater than your hatred of yourselves [this Day in Hell] when you were invited to faith, but you refused."
They will say, "Our Lord, You made us lifeless twice and gave us life twice, and we have confessed our sins. So is there to an exit any way?"
[They will be told], "That is because, when Allah was called upon alone, you disbelieved; but if others were associated with Him, you believed. So the judgement is with Allah, the Most High, the Grand."
It is He who shows you His signs and sends down to you from the sky, provision. But none will remember except he who turns back [in repentance].
So invoke Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, although the disbelievers dislike it.
