Word Meanings:
- اسْتَكْبَرُوا (Istakbaroo): Those who were arrogant and proud, the leaders and chiefs who refused to submit to the truth.
- كُلٌّ فِيهَا (Kullun fiha): All of us are in it (the Fire) — every single one, without exception.
- حَكَمَ بَيْنَ الْعِبَادِ (Hakama bayna al-‘ibad): Passed His final judgment among the servants — a decisive, just, and irrevocable ruling.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound scene from the Hereafter, we witness the leaders of disbelief — those who once walked the earth with arrogance, rejecting the messengers and oppressing the weak — now standing humiliated in the Fire. When their followers cry out to them, begging for even a share of the punishment to be lightened, the arrogant leaders respond with a bitter truth: "Indeed, all of us are in it." They admit that neither the leaders nor the followers can bear any portion of the other's burden. Every soul is fully occupied with its own torment, utterly incapable of helping another.
They then acknowledge the absolute justice of Allah: "Indeed, Allah has already judged between the servants." This is the final, decisive verdict from the Most Just of judges. He has separated the believers from the disbelievers, admitting the faithful into Paradise and the rejecters into Hellfire. There is no appeal, no intercession for the wrongdoers, and no escape from His decree. The scales of justice have been set, and every soul reaps exactly what it sowed.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a mirror held up to our lives today. The arrogance of those leaders was their downfall — they refused to humble themselves before their Creator and His messengers. Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy, has opened the door of repentance for us right now, in this world. He tells us: "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53). The judgment of the Hereafter is certain, but the path of return to Allah is open until the moment of death. Do not wait until you stand in that Fire, realizing that no one can help you. Humble yourself before Allah today, submit to His guidance, and you will be among those who hear the blessed call: "Enter Paradise, for you have no fear, nor shall you grieve." The choice is yours — and the time is now.
