Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Khazanah Jahannam: The keepers/guards of Hellfire, the angels appointed by Allah to manage the punishment of Hell.
- Yukhaffif: To lighten or reduce.
- Yawman: A day (here meaning a single day's worth of time).
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the torment of Hellfire becomes unbearable, and the reality of their eternal punishment sinks in, the inhabitants of the Fire—both the arrogant leaders and the weak followers alike—turn to the angels who guard Hell. In their desperation, they plead: "Call upon your Lord to lighten our punishment for just one day." They do not ask for complete removal of the punishment, nor do they ask for freedom or a return to the worldly life to repent. They have already lost all hope of that. Their request is humiliatingly modest—just one single day of relief from the endless agony, a brief respite to catch their breath, so to speak.
This request reveals the depth of their suffering and the utter helplessness they now feel. The same people who once arrogantly dismissed the messengers of Allah and mocked the idea of the Hereafter are now reduced to begging the angels—who are merely servants executing Allah's command—to intercede on their behalf. They do not even dare to call upon Allah directly, perhaps out of shame or fear, or perhaps because they know their sins have severed that connection. Instead, they ask the guards to be their intermediaries.
Yet, even this pitiful request will not be granted. The punishment is just, and the decree of Allah is final. This scene serves as a powerful reminder that the time for mercy and repentance is in this worldly life, not after death. The doors of forgiveness are open now, but once the soul departs and the Hereafter begins, no plea, no intercession, and no amount of regret can change one's fate. The Quran presents this scene to shake the hearts of the living, urging them to turn back to Allah before it is too late. How merciful is our Lord, who gives us countless opportunities to repent while we still draw breath! Let us not be like those who wait until the Fire is before their eyes to realize the value of a single moment of relief.
