Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rusulukum (your messengers): The prophets sent by Allah to guide their nations.
- Al-Bayyinat (clear proofs): Evident miracles, signs, and undeniable evidences that affirm the truth of the message.
- Dalal (loss/error): Here it means futility, waste, and complete loss—a supplication that leads nowhere and is utterly rejected.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the disbelievers in Hellfire cry out to its keepers, pleading, “Call upon your Lord to lighten our punishment for even one day,” the keepers respond with a stern rebuke, awakening their consciences: “Did your messengers not come to you with clear proofs and undeniable signs?” At that moment, the truth becomes undeniable, and they confess, “Yes, they certainly did.” But this confession comes too late—it is not one of faith, but of forced acknowledgment under the weight of torment.
Then the keepers, mocking their futile plea, say: “Then call upon Him yourselves!”—for the keepers will not intercede for those who rejected Allah’s messengers. And Allah closes the scene with a profound truth: “And the supplication of the disbelievers is nothing but in loss.” Their call is wasted, for it is not accompanied by faith, sincerity, or acceptance of the truth. It is like a mirage—they reach for water but find nothing but burning sand.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse is a powerful reminder of the urgency of heeding Allah’s messengers while there is still time. The messengers came to every nation with clear proofs—miracles, scriptures, and wisdom—yet how many turned away in arrogance? Today, the greatest proof stands before us: the Qur’an, a living miracle that challenges humanity to produce its like, and the noble character of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, whose life is a beacon of mercy and guidance.
Do not wait until the day when your confession will be of no avail. Open your heart to the truth now, respond to the call of faith, and make your supplication one that is accepted—a supplication born of belief, humility, and love for your Creator. For the doors of mercy are wide open in this life, but in the Hereafter, they are sealed forever. Let today be your day of return, and let your prayer be one that rises to the heavens, not one that falls into loss.
