Word Meanings:

  • As-Summ (الصُّمّ): Those who are deaf — here referring to those whose hearts are deaf to hearing and accepting the truth.
  • Al-ʿUmy (الْعُمْيَ): The blind — here referring to those whose inner vision is blinded, unable to perceive the signs of guidance.
  • Ḍalāl Mubīn (ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ): Clear, manifest misguidance — an evident deviation from the straight path of truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a gentle, compassionate rhetorical question that carries profound meaning. It was revealed at a time when the Prophet's heart was heavy with sorrow and concern over the persistent rejection of his people, as he desperately wished for their guidance and salvation from the Fire.

The verse asks: Can you, O Messenger, make the deaf hear, or guide the blind to the right path, or direct those who are lost in clear misguidance? The answer is self-evident — no human being possesses such power. Just as physical deafness and blindness cannot be cured by another person's will, spiritual deafness and blindness — where hearts have become sealed against the truth — are matters that lie solely in the Hands of Allah, the All-Wise.

The meaning is not to discourage the Prophet, but rather to comfort him and clarify the division of roles. His mission is to convey the message with clarity and sincerity — and he fulfilled this duty perfectly. But the outcome of guidance rests with Allah alone. He guides whom He wills and leaves astray whom He wills, according to His infinite wisdom and justice. Those upon whom the word of punishment has been decreed — due to their stubborn arrogance and rejection of truth after it became clear to them — will not benefit from any caller's efforts, for their hearts have become like sealed vessels.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer and caller to Islam. It relieves us of the burden of controlling outcomes — we are not responsible for people's acceptance or rejection of the message. Our duty is to present the truth with wisdom, beautiful preaching, and a noble character. The One who controls hearts is Allah alone.

Yet, at the same time, this verse is a powerful reminder of the immense blessing we have — the gift of hearing the truth and seeing it with clear eyes. If you are reading these words and your heart is open to guidance, know that this is a mercy from Allah. Do not take it for granted. Act upon what you know, draw closer to your Lord, and be among those who not only receive guidance but also become a means of guidance for others. For the Prophet's greatest joy was to see people enter the light of Islam — and you can share in that reward by conveying even a single verse, by living the beauty of this religion, and by praying for those who have not yet found their way.

📜 Verse 38-42 — Az-Zukhruf

Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "Oh, I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west - how wretched a companion."
And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.
Then will you make the deaf hear, [O Muhammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?
And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.
Or whether [or not] We show you that which We have promised them, indeed, We are Perfect in Ability.
