Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Na dhhabanna bika" (نَذْهَبَنَّ بِكَ): This is an expression meaning "We take you away," which refers to the Prophet's passing away (death) before witnessing the punishment of the disbelievers.
  • "Muntaqimoon" (مُنتَقِمُونَ): Those who exact retribution or vengeance; it refers to Allah's perfect justice in seizing the wrongdoers with punishment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) directly, offering him profound reassurance in the face of the relentless rejection and mockery he endured from his people. Allah says: "Even if We take you away — meaning, if We cause you to pass away before your own eyes witness the punishment of those who deny you — then know with absolute certainty that We will still exact retribution from them."

This is a divine promise that the victory over falsehood is not dependent on the Prophet's presence in this world. Whether he lives to see the disbelievers humiliated in this life — such as the day of Badr, when they were struck down by the swords of the believers — or whether he is called to his Lord before that, the punishment of the wicked is inevitable. Allah's justice is not bound by time or circumstance. If the Prophet were to die before seeing their defeat, then Allah would punish them after him, both in this world through defeat, captivity, and ruin, and in the Hereafter with the eternal torment of Hellfire.

This verse carries a powerful lesson for every believer: the cause of truth does not rely on any single individual, no matter how noble. Allah's promise of justice for the oppressors is absolute and will never fail. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was comforted by this certainty, and so should every Muslim be — that even when evil seems to prevail, and even if we do not live to see its downfall, Allah's retribution is certain. The disbelievers may rejoice temporarily, but their end is sealed in the hands of the All-Powerful, who misses nothing and forgets nothing.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse instills in the believer's heart a profound sense of trust in Allah's wisdom and justice. It teaches us that our role is to convey the message with sincerity and patience, while the outcome belongs entirely to Allah. How beautiful is this reassurance! When you face opposition for the sake of truth, remember that your effort is never wasted. Allah sees your struggle, and He has promised that falsehood will be crushed — whether in your lifetime or after. So hold firm, dear Muslim, and take comfort in this divine guarantee. The Hereafter is the ultimate arena of justice, where every wrong will be righted, and every oppressor will face the consequences of their deeds. Let this certainty fill your heart with peace and your steps with steadfastness.

📜 Verse 39-43 — Az-Zukhruf

And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.
Then will you make the deaf hear, [O Muhammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?
And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.
Or whether [or not] We show you that which We have promised them, indeed, We are Perfect in Ability.
So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.
