Key Words and Phrases:

  • ظَلَمْتُمْ (dhalamtum): You wronged (yourselves) — meaning you committed injustice against your own souls through disbelief and sin.
  • مُشْتَرِكُونَ (mushtarikun): Partners / sharing together — referring to sharing in the punishment.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when those who turned away from the remembrance of Allah enter the Fire, they will be told: "It will never benefit you today, since you wronged yourselves in the worldly life by committing shirk (associating partners with Allah) and disobeying His commands, that you are now partners in the punishment — you and your false deities and leaders whom you followed."

This verse crushes any false hope the disbelievers might entertain. They may imagine that because they share the punishment together with their fellow wrongdoers and the devils they followed, this sharing will somehow lighten the burden or provide some comfort — as if misery loves company. But Allah declares clearly that this is an illusion. The mere fact of being together in the Fire brings absolutely no relief. Each one of them will receive their full, complete share of the torment — a punishment tailored precisely to their crimes, with no portion reduced, no suffering alleviated, and no comfort found in the presence of others who are equally suffering.

The sharing in punishment is not like sharing a burden in this world, where companions can help carry the load. Rather, it is like prisoners in separate cells — each one isolated in their own agony, even if they can see one another. Every soul will taste its own punishment in full, and the presence of others only intensifies the regret and despair, as they realize that neither their former partners in sin nor their false gods can intercede for them or share even a moment of their torment.

A Call to Reflection and Guidance:

Dear reader — let this verse awaken your heart before it is too late. Today, in this worldly life, Allah in His infinite mercy has opened the door of repentance wide for you. You have the opportunity to turn back to Him, to purify your faith from any form of shirk — whether in worship, in intentions, or in obedience. The disbelievers on that Day will wish they could return to this world for even a single moment to correct their ways, but their wish will be denied. You, however, are still alive. You still have breath in your lungs and a beating heart. Do not wait until you stand before your Lord with empty hands. Embrace the pure monotheism of Islam, worship Allah alone, follow the guidance of His final Messenger ﷺ, and you will find a share of mercy and forgiveness that no sin — no matter how great — can stand against. Allah says: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful" (Az-Zumar 39:53). The door is open now — walk through it before it closes forever.

📜 Verse 37-41 — Az-Zukhruf

And indeed, the devils avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided
Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "Oh, I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west - how wretched a companion."
And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.
Then will you make the deaf hear, [O Muhammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?
And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.
