Word Meanings:

  • Aalihaatuna (آلِهَتُنَا): Our gods and deities that we worship.
  • Huwa (هُوَ): Refers to Jesus (Isa), peace be upon him.
  • Jadalan (جَدَلًا): Argumentation, disputation, or polemics for the sake of winning an argument, not for seeking truth.
  • Khasimoon (خَصِمُونَ): People who are habitually quarrelsome, contentious, and skilled in disputation.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse reveals the deceptive and arrogant attitude of the disbelievers of Quraysh when they confronted the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a twisted argument. They said: "Are our gods better, or is he (Jesus)?" — meaning, if Jesus, whom the Christians worship, is destined for Hellfire (as implied in their misunderstanding of the verse about those worshipped besides Allah), then they would be content to be with their idols in the same fate. This was a rhetorical trap they set, not out of genuine inquiry, but purely to argue and confuse.

Allah, the Most High, refutes their claim immediately: "They did not strike this example for you except for the sake of argument. Rather, they are a quarrelsome people." Their intention was never to reach the truth or to understand the message. They were simply driven by stubbornness, pride, and a deep-seated love for contention. They would twist any statement, no matter how clear, to create confusion and to justify their rejection of the truth.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the enemies of truth throughout history have often resorted to argumentation not to learn, but to defeat. They are not seekers of guidance; they are lovers of dispute. The Quran exposes their inner reality, showing that their arguments are hollow and built on false premises, for Allah had already clarified that Jesus was a noble prophet, not a deity, and that the idols they worshipped were mere creations, incapable of benefit or harm.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of the Quran's response. It does not engage in their futile debate, but rather diagnoses the disease: their hearts are filled with contentiousness. This is a timeless reminder for us today. When we call people to Islam, we must be wise and patient, but we must also recognize those who argue merely for the sake of arguing. Do not waste your energy on them; instead, focus on those with sincere hearts who seek the truth. And for ourselves, let us purify our intentions — never let our discussions about religion become a battleground for ego. Let every conversation be a means to draw closer to Allah, not to win a debate. The Quran is a light, and those who approach it with humility will find guidance, while those who approach it with arrogance will only find a reason to stumble. Choose to be among the humble seekers, for Allah opens the hearts of those who truly desire His guidance.

And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.
And when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud.
And they said, "Are your gods better, or is he?" They did not present the comparison except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.
Jesus was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.
And if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another] on the earth.
