Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ضُرِبَ مَثَلًا (was cited as an example): To mention someone as a case or analogy in a discussion.
  • يَصِدُّونَ (they turn away / they clamor): Here it means they raise their voices in excitement, clamor, and argument — some scholars also interpret it as turning away in rejection.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the polytheists of Quraysh were arguing with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about the verse in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:98) — *"Indeed, you and what you worship besides Allah are fuel for Hellfire"* — they saw an opportunity to object. They said: "If that is true, then Jesus (peace be upon him) must also be in Hellfire, because the Christians worship him!" They thought they had found a contradiction, and so they raised their voices in excitement, clamoring and rejoicing, saying: "We are pleased that our gods should be in the same position as Jesus!"

They were trying to use Jesus — a revered prophet — as a shield to defend their idols. But Allah responded in the very next verses (21:101) by clarifying that those for whom goodness has already been decreed from Allah — like Jesus, his mother Maryam, and other righteous servants — will be far removed from Hellfire. The verse applies specifically to those idols and false gods who were worshipped while being pleased with that worship — not to the prophets who were worshipped without their consent.

This incident reveals the desperate attempts of the disbelievers to find any excuse to reject the truth. They knew in their hearts that the Prophet's message was true, but their pride and attachment to their ancestral religion drove them to grasp at any argument, no matter how flimsy.

A Call to Reflection:

How beautiful is the Quran's response! It teaches us a profound lesson: Allah distinguishes between those who are worshipped willingly and those who are worshipped against their will. Jesus, peace be upon him, never asked people to worship him — he called them to worship Allah alone. The same applies to all prophets. So how could they be punished for what others did to them?

This verse also shows us the wisdom and eloquence of the Quran in addressing every objection with clarity and justice. The polytheists thought they had won an argument, but Allah turned their own logic against them, exposing their ignorance.

Dear reader, reflect on this: the disbelievers of Makkah were so eager to find fault with the Quran that they would seize upon any opportunity — even using a great prophet like Jesus as a tool for their mockery. Yet Allah protected His revelation and answered them decisively. This is a reminder that the Quran is the word of Allah, preserved and defended by Him, and that no argument against it can ever stand — no matter how clever it may seem at first.

Let this strengthen your faith: if Allah defended His message against such challenges in the past, He continues to protect it today. And if you ever encounter doubts or objections about Islam, know that the Quran has an answer for every question — because it comes from the One who knows all things.

📜 Verse 55-59 — Az-Zukhruf

And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.
And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.
And when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud.
And they said, "Are your gods better, or is he?" They did not present the comparison except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.
Jesus was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.
