Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Bakat (بَكَتْ): Wept or shed tears — used here metaphorically to describe the state of grief and mourning.
- Al-Samaa' wal-Ard (السَّمَاءُ وَالْأَرْضُ): The heavens and the earth — the creation that surrounds us.
- Munthareen (مُنظَرِينَ): Given respite, delayed, or granted more time.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse follows the dramatic account of Pharaoh and his people, who were drowned in the sea after their relentless tyranny and rejection of the truth brought by Prophet Moses (peace be upon him). Allah tells us that when they perished, neither the heavens nor the earth wept for them. This is a profound indication of their utter insignificance and the absence of any goodness in their lives. When a believer dies, the creation around them — the sky, the earth, the very places where they prayed and remembered Allah — feels a sense of loss, and it is said that they weep for that soul. But for Pharaoh and his followers, there was no such mourning. They left no legacy of righteousness, no trace of devotion, and no void in the spiritual fabric of the universe. Their death was met with silence from the cosmos.
Furthermore, Allah states that they were not given any respite — they were not delayed or granted more time to repent or escape the punishment that had been decreed for them. When the command of Allah came, it was immediate and decisive. There was no second chance, no postponement, and no opportunity to turn back. This serves as a stark warning that when divine punishment is decreed for persistent transgression and arrogance, it arrives without delay.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, ponder the weight of this verse. Imagine living a life so devoid of goodness that even the heavens and the earth do not mourn your passing. What legacy are we building? Are we planting seeds of faith, kindness, and righteousness that will make the creation of Allah bear witness to our worth? Or are we living in heedlessness, accumulating deeds that will leave the universe indifferent to our end?
This verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder that our time is limited. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us today — right now — to turn back to Him, to seek His forgiveness, and to fill our lives with actions that please Him. Do not wait for a tomorrow that may never come. The door of repentance is open, and Allah loves those who return to Him. Let us strive to be among those whose passing would be felt by the very fabric of creation — not because of our worldly status, but because of our sincere devotion to our Creator. And let us remember that the ultimate success lies not in the mourning of the heavens and the earth, but in the pleasure of Allah and His eternal mercy.
