Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Najjaynā (نَجَّيْنَا): We saved, rescued, or delivered from harm and distress.
- Al-ʿAdhāb al-Muhīn (الْعَذَابِ الْمُهِينِ): The humiliating punishment—a torment that degrades, disgraces, and strips a person of their dignity.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah (Exalted be He) reminds us of His profound mercy and favour upon the Children of Israel. He declares that He delivered them from a humiliating and degrading punishment that was inflicted upon them by Pharaoh and his people. This torment was not merely physical but was designed to break their spirit and humiliate them utterly. It involved the systematic slaughter of their newborn sons—so that the males would not grow to challenge Pharaoh’s tyranny—while their women were spared but subjected to servitude and exploitation, forced into labour and degradation. This was a constant, oppressive reality for them, a life of fear, grief, and subjugation.
Yet, in His infinite wisdom and grace, Allah intervened. He rescued them from this abject state, not because they had earned it by their own merit, but as a manifestation of His divine mercy and a fulfilment of His promise to their forefathers—the prophets Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (peace be upon them). This deliverance was a turning point, a moment when the oppressed were lifted from the dust of humiliation to the light of freedom, and it stands as a timeless testament to Allah’s power to change the circumstances of those who are patient and faithful.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: no matter how heavy the chains of oppression, no matter how deep the darkness of humiliation, Allah’s mercy is greater and His power knows no bounds. The story of the Children of Israel is not merely a historical account—it is a living lesson for every believer. It teaches us that trials are not permanent, and that the One who saved a helpless people from the tyranny of a mighty king is fully capable of relieving your distress, easing your burdens, and transforming your hardship into ease.
Let this verse inspire you to turn to Allah with a sincere heart, to trust in His promise, and to never lose hope in His mercy. For He is the One who says, "Indeed, with hardship comes ease" (Qur’an 94:6). And just as He honoured the Children of Israel with deliverance, He honours His believing servants who remain steadfast, lifting them from humiliation to honour, from weakness to strength, and from despair to triumph. So, hold firm to your faith, for the help of Allah is near, and His promise is true.
