Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sakhkhara (سخّر): Subjugated, subjected, and made subservient for your benefit.
- Al-Fulk (الفلك): Ships and vessels that sail upon the water.
- Tabtaghu min fadlihi (تبتغوا من فضله): To seek His bounty, provision, and lawful earnings through trade, commerce, and other permissible means.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah—and He alone—is the One Who has subjected the sea to your service, O mankind. Despite your inherent weakness and inability to traverse the vast waters on your own, He has made the ocean submissive to His command, so that ships may sail upon it with His permission and by His power, carrying you and your goods across distances that would otherwise be impossible to cross. He has not left this as a mere spectacle; rather, He has ordained it for your practical benefit—that you may seek His abundant provision through lawful trade, fishing, and other means of livelihood that depend upon the sea. And all of this is a sign of His mercy and grace, so that you may be grateful to Him—grateful for His countless favours, which should lead you to worship Him alone, obey His commands, and refrain from what He has forbidden.
Reflect, dear reader, upon this magnificent blessing: the same ocean that can be terrifying in its fury, with waves like mountains and depths that swallow all, has been made by Allah a smooth highway for your ships. He has given you the knowledge, the materials, and the ability to build vessels, and then He has commanded the wind and the water to carry you safely. This is not by chance or accident—it is the deliberate act of the Most Merciful, Who desires ease for you and not hardship. When you board a ship and see it glide across the water, remember that it is Allah Who holds it steady, and when you return with your provisions and your earnings, know that it is His bounty you have received. So let your heart overflow with gratitude, and let that gratitude manifest in your actions—by worshipping Him sincerely, by using His blessings in ways that please Him, and by sharing them with others. For the one who is grateful, Allah increases his blessings; and the one who is ungrateful, let him know that Allah is Rich beyond need, yet He still opens His doors of mercy to all who call upon Him.
