Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Hawāh (هَوَاهُ): His desires, whims, and inclinations.
- Khatama (خَتَمَ): Sealed or stamped, meaning a complete covering that prevents anything from entering or leaving.
- Ghisāwah (غِشَاوَةٌ): A covering or veil that obstructs vision.
- Aḍallahu (أَضَلَّهُ): Allah caused him to go astray as a consequence of his own choice.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Have you seen, O Messenger, the one who has taken his own desires as his god? Such a person does not worship the Creator; rather, he worships his own whims—whatever his soul craves, he pursues it without restraint, and whatever he dislikes, he abandons it, even if it is the truth. This was the state of the Arabs before Islam, who would worship stones and idols; if they found something more beautiful, they would discard the old and worship the new, following nothing but their fleeting preferences.
Allah then informs us that He has led such a person astray based on His perfect knowledge—knowledge that this person, despite having received the truth and having the proof established against him, chose to reject it out of stubbornness and arrogance. Because of this deliberate choice, Allah placed a seal upon his hearing, so he does not benefit from what he hears of guidance and admonition; and upon his heart, so he cannot comprehend or reflect upon the signs of Allah; and upon his vision, a covering, so he cannot perceive the evidences of truth that lie before him.
So after Allah has led him astray due to his own corruption, who can guide him? Who can open his sealed heart, unblock his ears, and remove the veil from his eyes? None can do so except Allah. Therefore, will you not take heed, O people? Will you not reflect and realize that following your desires is the path to ruin, while following Allah’s revelation is the path to success? Let this verse be a stern warning to every believer: do not let your desires become the driving force behind your actions, for the one who submits to his whims is the most lost of all people, and no one can rescue him from that state except the mercy of Allah.
This verse calls you to a profound truth: your heart was created to worship Allah alone, not to be enslaved by your passions. When you make your desire your god, you lose the very purpose of your existence. But when you submit to Allah, you find true freedom—freedom from the tyranny of your own whims, and you attain a peace that nothing in this world can provide. So reflect, dear reader, and ask yourself: who is your true god today? Is it your desires, or is it the Lord of the heavens and the earth? The answer to this question determines your destiny in this life and the next.
