Key Words and Phrases:

  • "Those who disbelieved" (الذين كفروا): The rejecters of the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) message, particularly the leaders of the disbelievers among the Jews and others who were arrogant.
  • "Would have preceded us to it" (ما سبقونا إليه): They meant that the poor and weak believers could not have been the first to embrace the truth if it were truly good, due to their low social status in the eyes of these elites.
  • "Ancient falsehood" (إفك قديم): A lie or fabrication that has been passed down from earlier generations, which they claimed the Quran was.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) exposes the arrogant logic of the disbelievers who rejected the truth out of pride and prejudice. When they saw the poor, the weak, and the humble among the believers—people like Abdullah ibn Salam and his companions—they scoffed and said: "If this religion of Muhammad were truly good and beneficial, these lowly people would not have beaten us to it. We are the nobles, the scholars, and the elites; if it had any value, we would have been the first to accept it."

This statement reveals their deep-seated arrogance and their false measure of truth—they judged the message by the social status of its followers rather than by its intrinsic merit and divine origin. They looked down upon the believers because they were not wealthy or powerful, not realizing that Allah chooses whom He wills to guide, and that righteousness is not measured by worldly rank.

Then Allah (the Most High) informs us of their stubbornness: because they did not guide themselves by the Quran and did not benefit from the truth it contains—indeed, they refused to reflect upon it—they resorted to another excuse. They began to say: "This Quran is nothing but an ancient lie, a fabrication copied from the tales of the forefathers." They claimed it was not a revelation from Allah but merely stories of old, hoping to discredit it in the eyes of the people.

Their contradiction is evident: first, they rejected the faith because they were too proud to follow the weak, and when they were unable to refute its truth, they labeled it as ancient myth. This is the way of every arrogant rejecter—when the truth confronts them, they find every excuse to turn away, whether by belittling its followers or by slandering its source.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, reflect on how these people were blinded by their pride. They had the opportunity to embrace the greatest blessing—the guidance of the Quran—but they let their arrogance and social prejudice stand between them and the truth. How many of us today do the same? We may reject a sincere call to goodness because we feel it comes from someone we consider "lesser" than us, or we may dismiss the clear signs of Allah because they do not align with our desires or social standing.

The Quran is not a tale of old, nor is it a human invention—it is the living word of Allah, a light that guides to the straight path and a mercy for all of humanity. Its truth is not measured by the status of its followers, but by its own divine perfection. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a mercy to the worlds, and his message was embraced by the sincere from all walks of life—the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak—because it addresses the heart, not the wallet.

So, open your heart to this divine call. Do not let pride, arrogance, or the opinions of others keep you from the path of salvation. The door of repentance is always open, and Allah welcomes all who turn to Him sincerely. The believers who preceded you were not perfect, but they were sincere, and sincerity is the key that unlocks the gates of divine mercy. Embrace the truth before it is too late, and be among those who say: "We hear and we obey." Indeed, the success of this life and the Hereafter lies in following the guidance of Allah and His Messenger.

📜 Verse 9-13 — Al-Ahqaf

Say, "I am not something original among the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am not but a clear warner."
Say, "Have you considered: if the Qur'an was from Allah, and you disbelieved in it while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar and believed while you were arrogant...?" Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
And those who disbelieve say of those who believe, "If it had [truly] been good, they would not have preceded us to it." And when they are not guided by it, they will say, "This is an ancient falsehood."
And before it was the scripture of Moses to lead and as a mercy. And this is a confirming Book in an Arabic tongue to warn those who have wronged and as good tidings to the doers of good.
Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah," and then remained on a right course - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
