Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse reveals the underlying cause of the misguidance and prolonged straying of the hypocrites — a cause rooted in their secret alliances with those who despised the revelation sent down by Allah. When the hypocrites encountered the disbelievers and the People of the Book who hated the Qur'an and the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), they whispered to them in private: "We will obey you in some matters." This meant they were willing to cooperate with them in undermining the Prophet's mission, discouraging the believers from jihad, and sowing discord within the Muslim community — all while outwardly claiming to be Muslims.
Allah, the All-Knowing, exposes their hidden treachery. Nothing escapes His knowledge — not their whispered conspiracies, nor the secrets buried deep within their hearts. He knows exactly what they conceal and what they plot, and He reveals their intentions to His Prophet so that the believers may be vigilant.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: sincerity to Allah and His Messenger must be absolute. The believer's loyalty belongs solely to Allah, His Book, and His Messenger. Any inclination toward the enemies of Islam — whether through secret alliances, compromising principles, or obeying them in matters that contradict Allah's commands — is a dangerous path that leads to misguidance. The hypocrites thought they could hide their double-dealing, but Allah's knowledge encompasses all.
How beautiful is the assurance that Allah is fully aware of every secret and every hidden scheme! The believer who remains steadfast in obedience to Allah and His Messenger need not fear the conspiracies of the hypocrites and disbelievers, for Allah protects His religion and His sincere servants. Let this verse be a reminder to examine our own hearts — are we truly sincere in our obedience to Allah, or do we sometimes compromise our principles to please others? True success lies in complete submission to Allah alone, for He is the All-Seeing, the All-Knowing, and to Him all matters return.
