Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • تَوَفَّتْهُمُ – takes their souls (at the time of death)
  • الْمَلَائِكَةُ – the angels appointed for this task
  • يَضْرِبُونَ – they strike
  • وُجُوهَهُمْ – their faces
  • أَدْبَارَهُمْ – their backs (the rear parts of their bodies)

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a vivid and sobering picture of the final moments of those who turn away from the truth and oppose the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). After describing their state in this world—how they rejoice in their disbelief and reject guidance—Allah poses a rhetorical question that strikes at the heart: "How will it be when the angels take their souls, striking their faces and their backs?"

The question is not seeking information; rather, it is a powerful call to reflect. It says: If their condition in this life is already one of arrogance and heedlessness, then what will their condition be at the very moment of death? At that time, the angels of punishment will descend upon them, not with mercy, but with iron rods. They will strike their faces—the most honored part of a human being, the part that bears the light of faith—and their backs, as a sign of utter humiliation and disgrace. These are not gentle taps; they are painful blows that accompany the extraction of the soul, making their departure from this world a torment in itself.

This scene is a stark contrast to the death of the believer. For the righteous, the angels descend with peace and reassurance, saying: "Do not fear and do not grieve, and receive good tidings of Paradise." But for these sinners, the angels come with severity, and their final moments are filled with terror and pain. The striking of the face and back is both physical punishment and a symbolic degradation—a recompense for those who turned their faces away from the truth and their backs to the commands of Allah.

The verse serves as a wake-up call for every soul. It reminds us that death is not a distant event but a certainty that can arrive at any moment. The way we live will determine the way we die. If we live in obedience to Allah, our death will be a transition to mercy. But if we live in defiance, our death will be a gateway to punishment. The angels are always ready to carry out Allah's command, and no one can escape their grip.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is not meant to frighten you into despair, but to awaken you into hope and action. Allah mentions this scene so that you may turn back to Him before that moment arrives. The door of repentance is open right now—this very second. You have the chance to change your story, to make your final moments a meeting with angels of mercy rather than angels of punishment. Do not wait until the angels are at your doorstep, for then it will be too late. Return to your Lord with a sincere heart, and He will forgive you, guide you, and grant you a beautiful ending. The choice is yours, and the time is now.

📜 Verse 25-29 — Muhammad

Indeed, those who reverted back [to disbelief] after guidance had become clear to them - Satan enticed them and prolonged hope for them.
That is because they said to those who disliked what Allah sent down, "We will obey you in part of the matter." And Allah knows what they conceal.
Then how [will it be] when the angels take them in death, striking their faces and their backs?
That is because they followed what angered Allah and disliked [what earns] His pleasure, so He rendered worthless their deeds.
Or do those in whose hearts is disease think that Allah would never expose their [feelings of] hatred?
