Word Meanings:
- يُحْفِكُمْ (yuhfikum): To press you hard, to be insistent and demanding upon you, to exhaust you with repeated requests.
- تَبْخَلُوا (tabkhaloo): You would withhold out of miserliness and stinginess.
- أَضْغَانَكُمْ (adghanakum): Your hidden grudges, resentments, and deep-seated aversions that lie concealed in the hearts.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah—the Most Merciful—reveals His profound gentleness and deep care for His servants. He tells us that if He were to ask you for all your wealth, and insist upon it and press you hard until it becomes burdensome, you would hold back out of miserliness. And in that very act of withholding, the hidden grudges and resentments within your hearts would surface and become exposed.
This is a subtle unveiling of human nature. When a person is asked to give what they cherish most, and the request becomes pressing and repeated, the true state of their heart emerges. The one who gives willingly and cheerfully reveals sincerity and love for Allah. The one who clings tightly to wealth reveals the resentment and displeasure buried within. So Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, does not ask for all your wealth—He asks only for a small portion, as a purification and a test, so that your hearts may remain clean and your faith intact.
The verse is a gentle reminder that Allah knows what lies within your hearts better than you do yourselves. He chooses not to put you in a position where your weaknesses would be exposed and your grudges would surface. This is not because He needs your wealth—He is the All-Rich, the Self-Sufficient—but because He loves for you to be people of open hearts, free from the stains of resentment and the chains of miserliness.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, see how your Lord deals with you with gentleness and compassion! He knows that wealth is beloved to the human soul, and that asking for all of it would be a hardship beyond your capacity. So He legislated for you the giving of a small, manageable portion—Zakat and charity—as a means of purifying your wealth and your heart alike.
Let this verse inspire you to give willingly and joyfully, not grudgingly. When you give for the sake of Allah, you are not losing anything—you are investing in your own purification. You are freeing your heart from the disease of miserliness, which is a barrier between you and the mercy of Allah. And you are protecting yourself from the exposure of hidden grudges that would otherwise surface.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Charity does not decrease wealth." So give, and watch how Allah multiplies your provision and purifies your soul. Do not wait until you are asked with insistence—be of those who race to goodness, whose hearts are open, whose hands are generous, and whose grudges have no place to hide. For Allah loves the givers, and He has prepared for them a reward beyond imagination.
