Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers! Here you are, being called to spend in the path of Allah — to support His religion, to aid His cause, and to stand firm against His enemies. This is not a demand for all your wealth; rather, you are asked to give a portion of what Allah has granted you. Yet among you there are those who hold back, who clutch their wealth tightly, refusing to part with even a small share for the sake of their Lord.
But let such a person know: when you withhold, you are not harming Allah in the least — you are only depriving yourself. Your stinginess does not diminish Allah's kingdom, nor does it delay His decree. Rather, it is your own soul that loses the immense reward, the purification, and the blessings that come with giving. The one who withholds is like a traveler who refuses to drink from a pure spring — he only thirsts himself while the spring continues to flow.
Allah is Al-Ghaniyy — completely free of any need for your wealth, your charity, or your obedience. He is the Owner of everything, and your spending adds nothing to His dominion. But you, O servants, are the poor ones — you are in absolute need of Him every single moment: in need of His guidance, His mercy, His provision, and His forgiveness. Your poverty before Him is total and constant, whether you acknowledge it or not.
So reflect, dear believer: when you are invited to spend in Allah's way, you are actually being invited to invest in your own future — to store up treasures that will never perish. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Every day two angels descend and one says: 'O Allah, give a compensator for every spender,' and the other says: 'O Allah, destroy every withholder.'" So open your hand, and Allah will open His mercy upon you.
And if you turn away — if you abandon this call, reject the faith, and refuse obedience — then know that Allah does not depend on you. He will destroy you and bring forth another people in your place: a people who will not be like you. They will be better than you in obedience, more generous in spending, more steadfast in faith, and more sincere in their devotion. They will answer the call of their Lord with open hearts and open hands, and they will fight in His cause with their wealth and their lives.
This is a profound warning and a beautiful invitation at once. Allah is not in need of your obedience, but you are in desperate need of His mercy. Do not let your wealth become a barrier between you and Paradise. Spend, and you will find that what you give is never lost — it is preserved with Allah, multiplied beyond measure, and returned to you on the Day when nothing else will avail you.
O soul that seeks salvation! The door of generosity is open before you. The call has been made, the promise is true, and the reward is immense. Do not be among those who turn away, but be among those who race toward goodness — for Allah loves those who spend in His path, and He has prepared for them a reward beyond what any eye has seen or any ear has heard.
