Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Shāhidan (شَاهِدًا): A witness — one who observes, attests, and bears testimony to the truth.
- Mubashshiran (مُبَشِّرًا): A bearer of glad tidings — one who conveys joyful news of reward and success.
- Nadhīran (نَذِيرًا): A warner — one who cautions and alerts against danger and its consequences.
The Interpretation:
In this verse, Allah addresses His beloved Messenger ﷺ with a profound declaration of his noble mission: "Indeed, We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of glad tidings, and a warner."
First, the Prophet ﷺ is described as a witness (shāhid) — a role that carries immense weight and honour. He is a witness over his nation, bearing testimony to their deeds and their response to the message he conveyed. On the Day of Judgment, he will testify before Allah that he delivered the truth clearly and completely, and that those who believed and followed him did so with sincerity, while those who rejected did so after the proof was established. This witnessing also means that his very life, character, and conduct stand as living evidence of the truth of Islam — his impeccable manners, his honesty, his compassion, and his unwavering devotion all testify to the authenticity of his prophethood.
Second, he is sent as a bearer of glad tidings (mubashshir) — a herald of hope and mercy. He brings news of the most beautiful rewards for those who respond to his call with faith and righteous action. For the believers, there is the promise of victory and empowerment in this world, the establishment of justice and peace, and above all, the eternal bliss of Paradise in the Hereafter. Every act of goodness, every sincere prayer, every moment of patience and gratitude is met with divine reward that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart can imagine.
Third, he is sent as a warner (nadhīr) — a compassionate guardian who alerts his people to the dangers that lie ahead. He warns those who persist in disbelief and disobedience of the consequences that await them: humiliation and defeat in this world, and the painful punishment of the Fire in the Hereafter. This warning is not born of harshness, but of profound mercy — for a loving guide warns his companions of a treacherous path not to frighten them needlessly, but to protect them from harm and guide them to safety.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, contemplate the magnificence of this divine mission. The Prophet ﷺ was not sent to merely inform — he was sent to witness, to give hope, and to warn. These three roles encompass the complete guidance humanity needs: the truth to be known, the reward to be desired, and the punishment to be feared.
This verse invites you to embrace the message with an open heart. The glad tidings are for you — if you believe and do good, Paradise awaits you with its eternal joy. The warning is also for you — so that you may turn back before it is too late. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has not left you without guidance; He has sent you a witness who showed you the way, a bearer of glad tidings who filled your heart with hope, and a warner who protected you from ruin.
Let this knowledge transform your life. Let the hope of Paradise motivate your good deeds, and let the fear of punishment deter you from sin. And know that the Prophet ﷺ, your witness, is the greatest intercessor and the most beloved of creation to Allah — follow his path, and you will find success in this life and the next.
