Word Meanings:

Sufficient for us" — meaning, what we have is enough; we need nothing else.
What we found our forefathers upon — their beliefs, practices, and traditions.
They knew nothing — devoid of true knowledge and understanding of the truth.
Nor were they guided — they did not find or follow the path of right guidance.

Explanation of the Verse:

When these disbelievers — who unlawfully declared some cattle and produce forbidden — are invited to submit to what Allah has revealed in the Qur'an and to the guidance of His Messenger (peace be upon him) so that they may distinguish the lawful from the unlawful, they respond with arrogance and blind imitation: "What we found our forefathers practicing is sufficient for us." They reject the divine revelation and the prophetic guidance, clinging instead to inherited customs and ancestral traditions.

But how can this be their justification? Their forefathers were people of ignorance — they possessed no true knowledge of Allah's oneness, no understanding of His commands, and no guidance toward the straight path. They were lost in darkness, and their descendants are following them blindly into the same abyss. The one who follows a blind leader is himself blind; the one who imitates a misguided predecessor is himself misguided. Allah exposes the folly of their reasoning: how can you take as your model those who knew nothing and were guided to nothing? True guidance comes only from Allah's revelation and the Prophet's Sunnah, not from inherited customs that have no basis in truth.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every generation. How often do we find ourselves defending practices and beliefs simply because "this is what our parents and grandparents did"? But the measure of truth is not in ancestry — it is in alignment with what Allah has revealed and what His Messenger (peace be upon him) taught. The Qur'an challenges us to think critically and to prioritize divine guidance over blind imitation. When you are invited to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet, do not turn away with the excuse of tradition. Instead, open your heart, seek knowledge, and let the light of revelation guide your steps. For the best legacy you can leave your children is not mere customs, but a firm foundation in faith and truth. The door of guidance is open — will you walk through it?

📜 Verse 102-106 — Al-Maidah

A people asked such [questions] before you; then they became thereby disbelievers.
Allah has not appointed [such innovations as] bahirah or sa'ibah or wasilah or ham. But those who disbelieve invent falsehood about Allah, and most of them do not reason.
And when it is said to them, "Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger," they say, "Sufficient for us is that upon which we found our fathers." Even though their fathers knew nothing, nor were they guided?
O you who have believed, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided. To Allah is you return all together; then He will inform you of what you used to do.
O you who have believed, testimony [should be taken] among you when death approaches one of you at the time of bequest - [that of] two just men from among you or two others from outside if you are traveling through the land and the disaster of death should strike you. Detain them after the prayer and let them both swear by Allah if you doubt [their testimony, saying], "We will not exchange our oath for a price, even if he should be a near relative, and we will not withhold the testimony of Allah. Indeed, we would then be of the sinful."
