Surah Al-Maidah — Verse 105

The Tafsir (Explanation):

O you who have sincerely believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed yourselves to His divine law! The call here is intimate and direct, addressing the very core of your faith. Allah commands you to take charge of your own souls — to discipline them, purify them, and hold them accountable. This means striving to fulfill Allah's commands, avoiding His prohibitions, and constantly seeking to improve your character and your connection with your Creator. It is a call to personal responsibility, reminding you that your primary duty is to your own spiritual growth and salvation.

The verse then delivers a profound reassurance: if you remain steadfast upon guidance — truly and sincerely — then the misguidance of those who have strayed will not harm you. This does not mean you should abandon calling others to goodness; rather, it means that when you have done your part — when you have guided, advised, and set the example — you are not held accountable for those who refuse to listen. Their choice is theirs, and their burden is upon them. However, the scholars clarify that this verse does not negate the duty of enjoining good and forbidding evil. On the contrary, being truly guided includes fulfilling this obligation with wisdom and gentleness, for it is part of the perfection of one's own faith. When you command what is right and forbid what is wrong, you are protecting your own soul and fulfilling your responsibility toward others.

Then comes the ultimate reminder that settles all matters: "To Allah is your return — all of you." The guided and the misguided, the obedient and the disobedient — every single soul shall stand before its Lord on the Day of Judgment. There is no escape, no intermediary, no evasion. And on that Day, He will inform you of everything you used to do — every deed, every word, every intention, whether hidden or public. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and nothing is lost from His record. This is both a promise of reward for the righteous and a warning of accountability for the negligent.

This verse carries a beautiful and empowering message for every believer: your salvation is in your own hands. You are not dependent on the choices of others, nor are you harmed by their errors when you remain upon the straight path. It liberates you from despair when you see widespread corruption, and it motivates you to focus on what you can control — your own heart, your own actions, and your own relationship with Allah. At the same time, it reminds you that no one bears the sin of another; every soul is responsible for its own deeds. So race toward goodness, purify your intentions, and let your light shine — for your return is to the Most Merciful, and His justice is perfect and absolute.
